How long does it normally take for Ritalin to kick in?

And do you take it on an empty stomach?

It takes 15 - 20 minutes for it to kick in for me. They recommend adults take it on an empty stomach, but it can cause more stomach upset that way -- so you kind of have to decide how big a problem that is.

Re: How long does it normally take for Ritalin to kick in?

Thanks All. I am new on this forum, only lurked for a couple of weeks. My doc switched me from Adderall to 5mg of Ritalin five days ago. So far, I, for the first time today, began to feel some physical changes. an ever-so-slight feeling of anxiety and the brain fog I experienced before Ritalin, seemed much worse. I'm wondering if anyone has waited this long a period of time for it to kick in? Others say it works within minutes and here I am, at the ending of my fifth day. Hmmmm.

Re: How long does it normally take for Ritalin to kick in?

Newbie here as well but from lots of reading here and elsewhere along with my experience 5mg sounds very low. How often do you take it?

My doc told me to start at 10mg but did not expect me to even notice it at that dose. Usually the instant release version if at the right dose only is effective for 3-4 hours for most people. She had me self adjust up to 30mg per dose as needed. For me 20-30mg was needed to have an effect.

Are you really sensitive to other meds or really light (though most say weight is not a significant factor)? Maybe call you doc and discuss increasing, 5mg really seems very low for an adult.

She did say if you are going to benefit from it you should feel some effect by 20mg per dose. And as others said I felt effect within 30 minutes.
