Unhappy First Day on Concerta...

New member to a diagnosis of ADHD inattentive type and this forum. My primary care prescribed me with Concerta 27mg after reviewing the evaluation of my testing today. So I took it this morning and then...fell asleep...ALL DAY LONG. Just woke up. Luckily I had the day off from work for Patriots Day. But seriously if it has this effect on me tomorrow at work I am going to be soooo mad. I simply cannot be falling asleep at work. Is this going to get better over time???

I was sleepy the first time I took Concerta too. The daytime sleepiness got better in a couple days. I was really tired after it wore off for several weeks at least, but I adjusted to that too.

If it doesn't get better, it may be that your dose is too high. Concerta also comes in 18 mg.

Angry 2nd Day on Concerta

ok...so normally I am extremely cheerful and the person who keeps this office lively. I am sooo bitter at everything I could spit nails and am close to crying for the first time in MONTHS. For no reason.

I cannot multitask. Seriously. I cannot even walk and talk at the same time. And feel like I am on crack....should I call my Dr. Or is she going to think I am crazy and tell me to "give it a few days"...

I would call your Dr. just to see what s/he says. My problem when starting Concerta was that it wasn't a high enough dose, so he just told me to wait until the next appointment. If you are having a hard time, your Dr. can probably help you find out why and give you some advice, possible a different dose or medication.

Yes but it can and does have a calming effect on ad/hd-ers. Thats how it helps focus, concentration, etc.
When I took 18mg of concerta, its was too calming, i was a total vegetable, i had to take 27 to get results that didnt include turning into a couch potato.

That's what happened with my son when he first started taking it. He kinda became and vegetable and got very emotional. We changed his dosage and now he does wonderfully on it.

Encnda, I don't think you have anything to worry about, the exact same thing happened to me. It won't be as bad, it just takes a little time the first few days on any new med are ususally pretty ROUGH.

If at the right dosage, it does, yes.

absolutely nil

I have been on this Concerta for two weeks now and it feels like nothing, really. No difference. I am wondering if I should wait the additional week till my doctor's appt or phone up now. I am only on 18 mg. seems a bit of a waste of money, really.
(and time, as i particularly need to focus now.)

Congratulations -- they got the diagnosis right!!! Non ADDers would be buzzing all over the place. The sleepiness should pass -- but it might take several days or more. I was real sleepy when I first took Concerta. That passed in a few days but I was still really wiped out when it wore off for several weeks at least. Now it doesn't effect me that way at all. If the tiredness doesn't ease off soon you might need a lower dose. It's recommended that doctor's start patients on 18 mg of Concerta. A small difference in dosing can make a big difference.

Good luck and welcome to the forums!

PS: Just read your later post -- it sounds like you might be on too high a dose -- you shouldn't ideally be buzzing that hard on the right dose. I'd recommend giving your doctor a call -- I doubt they'll think you're crazy if you ask to try a lower dose.

According to Dr. Dodson at the ADDA Conference you pretty much know within a few days if the dose of stimulents is right for an adult. Why not ask your doctor if you can try a higher dose?

ADDers have a paradoxical reaction on stimulents. It wakes up their sleepy cortex so it can do it's job of regulation activity level, attention, filtering and such.
