Could I really be this crazy????

I just went to a new psychiatrist about ADHD. My dad's side of the family has 5 people with add, and my mom's side has history of bipolar. I talk too much, feel like my mind will never stop running, can't enjow hobbies(cant focus for longer than 2 seconds), am about to get fired from my job due to lack of organization , and my live in boyfriend is about to leave me because our house is a mess (cleaning is boring and frustrating to me). My doctore started me out on .5 mg of klonopin.... I pretty much know I have add, after talking to my parents about school as a child confirmed this.... My doctore has said I am hypomanic and may have gad. Is it possible to have hypomania, gad, and add????????????? What if he messes up my diagnosis... That is what I am afraid of..... PLEASE someon answer.... I need and answer

Yes. I have have severe ADHD primarily inattentive and GAD, no BPD though. I know its possible and hope you get more replies soon. I exhibit hypoactivity, cannot say thats like hypomania because I don't know.

Martha, I strongly suggest that you only go to an attention deficit disorder SPECIALIST!! No one else. Most psychiatrists assume bipolarity because they lack sufficient training with ADD. ADD specialists can more easily differentiate between bipolar and ADD. Of course, some people do have both. But, to be safe, I would go to a search engine (Google/Yahoo/Whatever) and type in your zip code or your city and state or the nearest big city and then type in attention deficit disorder SPECIALIST and only call doctors on that list.

Of course, I also have an anxiety disorder and I've been taking Klonopin for 7 months. It may reduce the efficacy of my meds slightly, but it is also helpful for my other condition. I see a specialist, however. He took several months to determine whether I was bipolar or ADD. I had two assessments. When he finally diagnosed me, it was with complete confidence.

I have read that Bipolar Disorder in Children is the new "trend" diagnosis or misdiagnosis apparently it is due to all of the bad hype with ritalin and too much of it happening the other way around it is common to see kids who are just hyperactive and they get abused end up depressed and get the bipolar label (similar to what happened to me as a kid 1992 was around the time that it started)... but I had went through every med for that with no response and a family history of adhd but not bipolar disorder and my new doctor took me off of the last one (topamax) which made add worsen and i have failed everywhere else and at last I am back on dexedrine alone and stabilized finally... took dexedrine for 4 years as a kid before the diagnosis rotation (at that time bipolar and adhd weren't diagnosed together) and was calm... solution

The Bipolar thing is interesting

Yes, disorders can occur together, this is called comorbidity. I have ADD, PTSD, and a history of depression. There is no history of Bipolar in my family, and it has been ruled out by several docs. 2 othe docs wanted to diagnose me w/bipolar or bipolar II. I honestly don't believe I have it.

This is your post, I put this here so you can see how common dx probs are and how difficult it can sometimes be to sort them all out. This is why second opinions are in order-2 heads are better than 1.

A family history of BPD is pretty significant-but not an absolute. The goal of anyone's treatment is correct dx, appropriate meds, and support. If you ever watch Mystery Diagnosis, you will see how hard it can be to accurately dx any type of health problem, especially the less common.

Remember, the practice of medicine is an art, not always a science.

I have adhd, and anxiety disorder. My mother had bipolar disorder, and so does my daughter. My grqandson has ADHD.

It is possible to have several disorders at the same time. Anxiety disorder is probably a result of ADHD, in my case.

Bipolar disorder is serious stuff. Work with your doctor on it and get it treated.

good luck

I agree that ADD might be the catalyst for developing anxiety disorder and panic attacks.

Aint it a beast?

Mine did that until I was 48 and learned to be affirmative about myself ie., stating my positive qualities, and my value as a person in my conversations with her. I kinda talked in 3rd person. This worked much better than a confrontation with hurt feeling and tears on both sides.

Confused her at first but now she seems to understand is changing to be more positive and supportive. It is really nice.

Hoping you will find your peace with your mom.
