adderall and sex drive
SEX RELATED
im lost ![]() while i have never been a sex driven person i always wished i was. when i started going out with my current girlfriend and began having sex with her i noticed that she wanted it more then i did. now she being a vergin when we meet i can understand but it has been months... during out relationship which is a GREAT one i have found myself thinking WHY do i NOT want sex... am i lazy? chemically imbalanced? this i delt with and am able to keep her happy. the problem has gotten worse though since i have started taking adderol xr 20mg. i have noticed that i am WAY more open and talkative. inhabitions are lowered and i rathe renjoy the medication. i start feeling the adverse effects in bed though. my erections are not as strong and do not last as long as when i was not on the medication. compound that with a condom through which sensation is deminished( i have tried MANY condoms) and i feel like i cant get it up/keep it up... i stoped taking adderall xr for a month or so and the problem went away.. i would like to know if this side effect will decrease in the future because the medication helps me in college and at work a lot. are there any over the counter meds i can take that would combat the lowered sex drive.. are any of those adds in the back of magazines real? please point me in some direction. pardon my spelling and grammer its 3:53 am |

One suggestion I would make is for your girlfriend to consider going on the pill (or some other birth control other than condoms). That would relieve the condom issue and help matters somewhat. Of course I would only suggest that if you two are exclusive and are free of any STD's.

Switch to regular Adderall. It only lasts 4-6 hours.
Just don't take an evening dose. Adderall kills my food appetite and it comes back strong in the evening if I skip my evening dose.

Could you not use it on the week-ends and just commence your sexual activities then? It might work.

Sex Drive Question
I just wanted to bring this post back up again to be noticed because out of all of the posts, no one really answered Romeo's questions. I don't have an answer as I am not on Adderall but would be interested in some other opinions/points of view to his questions. Thanks

Let's see... full-time job, college, AD/HD, meds, girlfriend....sounds to me like this all = STRESS -- and I can't think of anyone (superhuman or not) who could "stand up" thru this.
Sounds to me you're being a tad rough on yerself. I don't think a pill's the real answer.

You know, I am having the same problem, I just switched to XR and my girlfriend has not been happy, It seems sometimes I have sex just to make her happy and I cant even do that. I am semi-erect at best. SOmetimes I forget to take the XR and when my gf and I are intimate, she can call me on whether or not I forgot the XR on that particular day

"are there any over the counter meds i can take that would combat the lowered sex drive.. are any of those adds in the back of magazines real? "
In a word - No. The ads in the magazines are spurious, Fake, placebos whatever you want to call it. Nothing "over the counter" is going to improve sex drive. Testosterone is sometimes prescribed for this, but it is usually for older men - I doubt you have a testosterone problem. Viagra can help with the physical side of things but I think the real solution here is to change your meds or the way you take them. Amphetamines are not good for your erection - you need to make sure you are not "high" on them when you want to have sex. It could also be a bit of stage fright - worrying that you won't get it up can prevent you from getting it up - a self fullfilling prophecy. Try not taking Adderal the day you want to have sex ands see what happens.

I'm taking Dexedrine but was having the same trouble. I am not sure why but after four months or so the side effects went away for the most part. I went from having no trouble getting hard to not having an erection at all.
But something changed and now it's not an issue. I expect my sexual function might have come because I started to exercise twenty minutes a day. I'm not about to quit doing that to check though.. heh The Dex seems to stay in my system quite a while too. I couldn't just take a day off and expect to recover my abilities to function sexually. I had to have a full two days without Dexedrine behind me to function almost normally on the third day. It sucked. I'm glad those side effects are diminished. I've always had a high sex drive so it was a shock to the system to loose the potency. One thing I discovered when I was at my least functioning was that marijuana certainly addressed the potency problems handily. I hadn't had any grass for a very long time previously, but decided to experiment and it worked wonderfully. It also worked for other elements too but I'll talk that out with a psychiatrist on the 18th. If he has anything to offer on the subject I'll share it on this board. Small doses were the order of the day. I'm supposed to be doing a trial of Wellbutrin after I see the psychiatrist on the 18th. I see from the tv ads it's not supposed to have side effects that influence sexual function but I'm sure it has others. Good luck with this you all... and me too.. ;^) Cheers! Ian.

As a woman, I obviously haven't noticed "potency" or erectile difficulties while taking amphetamines (first Adderall, now Dex) for my ADD, but I definitely have noticed sexual difficulties. Not lack of desire, but delayed climax (sometimes very delayed) or inability to do so at all. And I am taking 150 mg. Wellbutrin XR. (Along with 50 mg. Zoloft, which could be adding to the problem; but I was on the anti-d's before the stimulants and didn't notice much of problem then.)
It is most frustrating. In some ways, I feel lucky I'm not in a relationship right now -- I'd be worried about bruising the fellow's ego and/or making him think he can't please me. I think I will take a stimulant holiday of a couple of days just to see if I'm correct about what's causing it. Then, figure out what to do about it. Last edited by sywi; 05-21-04 at 05:47 PM.. |

The best advice in this situation is this: see a doctor. Get a complete physical w/blood tests & etc. There could be other causes that you don’t know about. I don’t think it does any good for us to tell him that we have or have not had the same problems. He needs to get a check up.

As a follow-up to my post two posts back -- I found a page on Dr Bob's Mental Health Links (same Dr. Bob who runs the Psycho-babble site) about "Psychopharmacology Tips for SSRI sexual dysfunction." You can Google it.
It features posts from quite a few pdocs about what they've found works (and sorta works, and doesn't work) to combat SSRI-caused sexual dysfunction in men and women. Now, obviously SSRIs are not the same as Adderall, but maybe one of the things that they say works with SSRIs would work for Adderall, too. I'd say definitely check with your doctor first, though. For instance, some of these also increase available dopamine, and so might make the problem worse and/or add up to much stimulant; or they may mix badly with Adderall. FWIW... |
