Unhappy Strattera - Can't keep erection? Anyone else? Solution?

A week ago I started Strattera 60mg (I am 275 lbs and 6 foot 3). It seems to be starting to work on my ADHD but i am now having a big time issue keeping an erection during sex. Even by masterbation is usually stays soft and will cum that way if at all. Has anyone else had this issue. I have seen where some people take levitra to overcome... but this seems to be dangerous being they both are uppers, and that also gets very expensive (10 dollars a pill for levitra and insurance doesnt cover it).

Any other solutions? Anyone else have this issue?

Same problem, different drug

I have not taken Strattera, so I can't comment specifically about it. But I had the same problem a few years back when I was taking Paxil CR. It was very difficult or impossible to maintain an erection. I couldn't 'finish the act' either, even if I got it up.

For me, it came down to deciding which was more important to me. The benefit of the drug (much less anxiety) or having a good sex life. I eventually switched to Effexor and the sexual side effects decreased significantly.

Have you tried anything other than Strattera for your ADHD? I take Adderall and it works great for me. The only problem I've had with it is that it kicks my sex drive into overdrive at times, particularly when I've had a dosage increase. That can be as big or bigger problem (no pun intended) than the erectile issue.

Wish I could be more helpful. Good luck.

Talk to your doctor, maybe Straterra is not right for you.

Hey Nashguy,

Can relate though as a result of other meds (or maybe just getting older). Finally agreed to try Levitra. It's intereactions weren't was wide as I had feared (although I assumed that it stimulated blood flow to get an erection that does not, in fact, seem to be how it works, my basic, and perhaps incorrect, understanding is that it allows more blood to flow into the organ). I was told there was no problem with dexedrine or ritalin while taking levitra. It does work, though I agree, very expensive. Cialis looks to be a bit more cost-effective as it seems to be the same price but lasts longer.

I have made the type of quality of life choice that Allfiredup mentioned with respect to other conditions and meds. When you are on significant amounts of maintenance meds you begin to question, not only from a $$ point of view but also in terms of impact to liver, kidneys etc, which things you can ignore and which you want to try and do something about.

If you decide to switch meds in the hope that something new will be better, my experience is that everyone is different but docs don't always bear this in mind. For example, effexor has caused similar problems with me and others I know, though this can diminish over time. There are other drugs, like prozac, that are known to interfere with sexual function for some but I found actually greatly enhanced sex for me. My point is that your doc may steer you away from some drugs because they are "known" to have the same side-effect when in fact they may not have the same effect for you ... so a little determination and persuasion may be necessary in trying to get access to alternatives.

Good luck!

I'm 24 and strattera completely killed my libido. I'm not talking about a minor drop, I'm talking about no interest in sex at all. It also killed my ability to have an erection and somehow messed up the timing between ejaculation and my orgasm. Not to mention, post orgasm it felt like someone had kicked me in the groin. I have no idea how that happened, it doesn't even make sense. But it happened. I have heard other guys talking about the same effects, so at least I know I'm not alone. Sorry if that's TMI, but this drug was pure evil in my experience.

the only solutino to the side effects seems to be discontinuation of the medication.

I had bad side effect from strattera and they stopped within two days of discontinuing it.

Not good

Well clearly some drugs have a well deserved reputation.

Hope you've found other stuff that helps with mental functioning at a lower quality-of-life price.

I've used Cialis a couple times in the past and can attest to it making me feel like I was a teenager again. Now that I've just started Adderall, I'll be monitoring my 'response' to see if I need to get a Rx for it to help out.

don't be ashamed, my wife loved the...umm...effectiveness of Cialis. plus it works for like 36 hrs...bonus-nookie

Crap Strattera was the only med I was considering, but I don't think I'm going to touch it now. That being said, does it seem to help your focus, etc?

Ooooo

OOOOOOOOHH man ... I can so relate to that it's not even funny. I took it for a while, increased my dosage, followed all the stomache wrenching steps and ended up with a "softwood lumber dispute down south" (so to speak) I couldn't get wood if I was blindfolded in the rockey mountains. SOO ... in short, the answer is stop taking it, only if you value your boner. I know that mine is valuable. But to be serious now. It really isn't that you can't get wood, its more that you can't get your mind to click into sex mode. I know I felt kind of "neutral" all the time. Emotionless if you will. For me thats good though (I'm a basketcase sometimes). Go to your doc and give ritalin a shot. It's kind of like the whiskey of ADD meds. I took one and it made me sleepy, kind of like strattera, but it only lasted 4 hr.s and no side effects. If it makes you kind of sleepy, then you know you have ADD forsure and carry on with either that med or another (adderall, concerta, whatever) But ritalin is what I take these days, and it's great.

It's nice to be capable of hanging onto your ADD and having moments without it at the same time. Give it a shot. I promise you wont loose wood over it . Goodluck Hugh Hefner

PS: Mcinny, my boner came back the verry next day so don't let that put you off. If you're single you've got nothing to loose anyways. It's really not that bad

Very Interesting thread fellas!

Both Strattera and Wellbutrin (SNRIs) enhanced my sexual abilities on all fronts! Both erection firmness and intensity of orgasm increased for me! Yeehaw!!

Stimulants made no difference at all except they made me self conscious about my manhood looking like I was 10 years old again and just got out of the pool!

And every single antidepressant (SSRIs) I have ever taken has wiped out both my erections and orgasms almost, if not 100% completely! I hate SSRIs!

I wonder why ADDers respond so differently??

I guess the bottom line is that everyone is different and you'll never know what will work for you until you try them!

Best of luck fellas!
