I have no Dr.'s diagnoses saying I have ADD. I have tested highly probable on all online tests I have taken. I began to suspect it because I seem to do better with my depression if I have stimulants. At first I discovered ephedrine helped, than phentermine, lately I've tried Ritalin and am taking that now. I do better but I suspect that Ritalin is not quite right for me. My medical treatment comes from the VA. My VA DR. seems unwilling to even discuss trying Ritalin must less anything considered stronger, i.e. Adderall. I've had substance and alcohol abuse issues in the past and having been labeled an "addict" cannot get help.from the VA with this problem. I try to show the DR. the tests, which he only glances at and then seems to reject out of hand. Perhaps this is too leanghty a reply for this forum. But, hey, I'm new.

Hi folks,

This is Belynda (L8AGN) and I am in Baton Rouge. I have volunteered with the local ADHD support group (now a CHADD Chapter) since 1990. I have a teenage son with ADHHHHHHHHHHHD, anxiety, depression, and a touch of OCD just to make it interesting. Mel, thanks for sending me an email and mentioning this Forum. I'm a newbie here and just posted a far-too-long note on another thread about the CHADD Conference. I'll try to be more brief here.

In Baton Rouge we have our regular CHADD meetings on the 4th Sunday of most months. We have from 4 to 280 people in attendance. (The 280 was an aberration, but I still like to quote the number!). We have a ADDult Support Group that meetings on the third Monday of the month, but frankly, our ADDults forget to attend. That always gets a laugh but you KNOW it's true! Our last regular Chapter meeting featured a local psychologist who spoke on gender issues and ADHD. Even though we promoted this heavily to our ADDults as our yearly regular meeting on ADDult issues, NONE of them showed up, including the facilitator!!! Pretty frustrating.

Anyway, if any of you are near Baton Rouge and are interested in attending Chapter or ADDult meetings, please let me know. Maybe some new blood and fresh ideas will get them going again and will benefit you as well. Personally, if I hadn't found the local support group back when my son got kicked out of her first day care at age 3 (with four more evictions to follow in the next two years), I don't think I would have made it.

Hey, Bel....I actually posted something about support group meetings here in dis section......IT IS AWESOME to see ya here! I'm down here close to new orleans so I dunno If I could make it to Baton Rouge.....

I feel the same way about the forums...if wasn't for this place I would not have made it either....I actually emailed Louisiana CHADD too last night for info on ADHD that can be sent to the the websites who are telling false statements about ADD, I know emailing anyone about this is a long shot but better than not trying at all. Ya know.

I saw your email this morning. That's what led me to the Forum as I mentioned above. Thanks! I have been looking for an active Forum to refer some of my local folks to and this one looks great. We have message boards on our local website, but not a lot of activity.

Have you hooked up with CHADD of New Orleans? I am not certain what they offer for ADDults, but if they are like us, they would be happy to have someone interested in getting a group going. We used to have an active group that a therapist from New Orleans drove over to facilitate once per month. He is still in New Orleans, and made a presentation at a CHADD conference a few years ago, but our local group is now run by one of our ADDult volunteers who REALLY needs som help. Frankly, I am overwhelmed and can't take on anything else, but if someone out there is in our area, we would love to get the ADDult group really rolling again.
