Question Focalin/Ritalin/Adderall - QUESTIONS

Given that everyone reacts differently to meds...

What would you say is the difference in the way that Focalin, Ritalin, and Adderall make you feel - physically and mentally?

I'm on Adderall now and am considering trying something different - I'm kinda leaning toward Focalin.

Some input on the differences would be great. Also, what is with the belief or thought that (dex)methylphenidate meds are mainly for children or work better for them, whereas things like Adderall and Dexedrine are more 'grown-up' drugs?

If I were to switch, generally, what differences would I likely see?

Well technically the only FDA approved stimulants for adults are Adderall XR and Focalin XR. Anything else is 'off-label' use.

I've tried them all. The amphetamines to me are much 'smoother' and more effective. Methylphenidate to me seems much 'harsher' in terms of stimulation and side-effects. Focalin XR (d-methyl.) is very effective to me and is pretty close to Adderall and Dexedrine. It's a hard-hitting med that gives great focus minus the harsh overstimulation and rebound that regular methylphenidate meds give.

You won't know until you try something other than Adderall though. If you goto the focalinxr website there is a free coupon to try. *If* I have one negative thing about Focalin XR is the release profile. You get two very distinctive peaks which can be noticable but other than that its a great med.

Hey JR1973,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I've seen the Focalin XR coupon and I think I'ma get it and take it to my appointment this coming Monday...and see what pdoc thinks.

I really want to see how I react to Focalin...

My kids are both on focalin and the youngest was given it because in some people it does not cause the same weight loss as regular methylphenidate. This was true for my youngest. She gains on focalin but not on concerta. Focalin can cause more emotional lability and may have a harsher wearing off phase (warning from the doc), although we do not see either.
