Wellbutrin shelf life?

Found an old bottle of budeprion in the bathroom today. My wife used to take them a while back. The issue date was 08/01/2005. The use by date is 08/01/2006.

Before we throw them, is the above 'discard date' an obligatory legal requirement & is the shelf life really longer, or are the pills genuinely not good for medicating anymore?

She now uses Adderall, so it matters not either way, but I would hate to throw them if she goes back to wellbutrin in the next few months.

Any advice would be appreciated.

the us military did a study of like 2 billion medications and found that most were good for 15 yrs after the issue date.

They should still be good. Medications usually seem to last a while

It might be good idea to check with your pharmacist.

Re: Wellbutrin shelf life?

I've seen generic SR go bad after less than a year. The moisture in the air did them in and the result was visually obvious. The Teva XR (budeprion) has a number of desiccant packs in the bottle, so I assume it's also quite sensitive to moisture. Translation: I'd be careful, especially if the bottle was kept in a moist place (like the bathroom).

Re: Wellbutrin shelf life?

All the studies I've read on expired medication talk about the impact of storage
conditions. Ideally, drugs should be stored in a dark place away from any light,
in dry conditions, and kept cool. It would probably be a good idea to throw out
drugs that have changed color/faded or got crumbly or the coating wrinkled
and/or started coming off.

Don't keep medication in bathrooms because it's not always cool and dry.
If stored in the kitchen, not over or near the dishwasher, stove, or oven.
The top of the refigerator is too warm.

The military put those drugs that were tested in cool, dark,
humidity controlled storage facilities.

Re: Wellbutrin shelf life?

I've been on-and-off Wellbutrin for 15 years as treatment for mild depression. I was off it for several years recently and decided to start again, and decided to try using some I had stored for at least 2-3 years. I noticed an improvement in my mood right away (and no ill-effects whatsoever) and used up the old stuff in about 2 months. I got a new prescription and noticed a difference in the newer medication right away- an even greater improvement in my mood and energy. My 2 cents worth: older wellbutrin still has value if stored properly, but has probably lost some potency.

Re: Wellbutrin shelf life?

The free samples the Nurse Practitioner gave me expire next month, they are foil sealed bottles.
They were intended for someone else, but they never got them.

The NT checked the date, "Hmmm, they expire next month"
I said, "That's just legalese, they got to have an expiry date"

I don't care if they weren't fresh, they were free, a free month of meds!
