Does Dexedrine (or any amphetamine) raise stress (cortisol) levels?

I'm just wondering if anyone knows for sure whether amphetamines taken long-term as directed by a doctor have been linked to higher cortisol production?

Do you have any medical problems? I'd look for those as a cause of elevated cortisol before looking at stimulants.

What is your health issue?

Re: Does Dexedrine (or any amphetamine) raise stress (cortisol) levels?

In general, long term, low-dosage AMPH use makes brains work better. That said, munky, there isn't much good data on long term AMPH use and cortisol. There is, however, a lot of research on acute cortisol response to AMPH.

Acute cortisol response is generally positive (increased), but it varies a lot. Most traits associated with ADD are also associated with enhanced response to amphetamines. But curiously, depression nearly eliminates the cortisol response. The more i read, the less sense my brain makes to me.
Various studies have found these things:

among normal people, AMPH ---> increase in cortisol and dopamine
among depressives, AMPH ---> NO INCREASE in cortisol
among schizophrenics, AMPH ---> increase in cortisol
among thrill seekers, AMPH ---> extra increase in cortisol
among the aggressive, AMPH ---> extra increase in cortisol
among the anxious, AMPH ---> normal increase in cortisol
AMPH + higher base cortisol levels ---> extra increase in dopamine
AMPH + higher motor activity ---> extra increase in cortisol and DA
higher AMPH ---> NO EXTRA INCREASE in dopamine or cortisol

The literature is pretty consistent in saying response to AMPH is all over the board. Let me know if you want cites or whatnot.

Sorry to dig this post up after so long, but does the "AMPH" here mean "amphetamine?"

i'm near certain it does
if the post has any sense to it whatsoever
which...is quite possibly debatable

Re: Does Dexedrine (or any amphetamine) raise stress (cortisol) levels?

Thanks, and yes, I sort of agree about the point of the poster's question.

I've just read through a lot of pages that give reference to one or more of these points:

among normal people, AMPH ---> increase in cortisol and dopamine
among depressives, AMPH ---> NO INCREASE in cortisol
among schizophrenics, AMPH ---> increase in cortisol
among thrill seekers, AMPH ---> extra increase in cortisol
among the aggressive, AMPH ---> extra increase in cortisol
among the anxious, AMPH ---> normal increase in cortisol
AMPH + higher base cortisol levels ---> extra increase in dopamine
AMPH + higher motor activity ---> extra increase in cortisol and DA
higher AMPH ---> NO EXTRA INCREASE in dopamine or cortisol

......which says to me that cortisol production is governed by who you are and how you grew up. (Because it is one that's not in the list, so not at all scientific.) The "depressives" should read a decrease in cortisol from what I've been reading.

If it makes any difference, the answer to the poster's question is definitely - yes.......depending on who you are.

Re: Does Dexedrine (or any amphetamine) raise stress (cortisol) levels?

I don't think so...I had mine tested while on Vyvanse and it was normal (cortisol) then I had a very stressful period in my life, unemployed, starting a new job, very busy at work etc. etc. had a breakdown and went to see the doctor. My cortisol was very high, off the charts ha..ha..it's prolonged stress that will cause it to rise, not AMPH use.

In the long run? I'm no doctor but, I believe if you take as prescribed and having more positive effects than negative no, or just stay updated on your normal check-ups.

Was your cortisol level low before you started with the Vyvanse?

No, it was fine. I've had adrenal fatigue before where my cortisol levels were too low and I couldn't function. But before I started Vyvanse I was all right.

Isn't it the stress side effect of the meds that in turn increases the cortisol levels?.

Re: Does Dexedrine (or any amphetamine) raise stress (cortisol) levels?

Bump an old thread.

Last year i was going through massive stress and alot of environmental depression. Dexedrine worked but also made my depression and emotional swings worse. Now that im alot better its not causing issues like before such as digestive issues.
