Thanks for the invite

What a fantastic Forum, many thanks to David, Tara, Big for the hard work and constant dedication you all have to providing information and venues about AD/HD. As with many ADDults who were dx'ed later in life there is so much that is finally explained by understanding ADD and its side effects that once I start the words just pour out. So, here goes, who I am.

I am a 44 year old male and I was dx'ed and started treatment for ADD and general anxiety disorder in Sept '02. The effect of medication and awareness was immediate and I was able to finally structure my approach to the many many things that constantly slipped for me in the past. I also discovered that after this initial euphoric state that the long term success for me requires checklists, use of my planner, etc. to keep me on track. It is way to easy to slide back into the old habits and I most certainly do not want to go back there. I recently reviewed my elementary school report cards and the common thread through all my grades practically flashes ADD in neon lights. But as David and others have said they did not dx ADD back then unless you were extremly hyper-active. The side effects of ADD can be insidious, the self-doubt and self-esteem killing thoughts that are born of oft repeated 'failures' and with so many saying you are so smart but you are lazy. It is difficult to even write this down because I spent so many years questioning my inner character and worth. But, I must say that I can now objectively look at the things that occur and not waste so much time on self-blame. I work as a field pre-saless system engineer for a business software vendor (It is true, so many of us ADDults gravitate towards sales). I am on the road a lot so this forum is perfect for me to stay up to date on the many topics covered here.

I am divorced twice (my ex'es are still my very best friends, which baffles me of why they are ex'es but that is another story) I have three sons from my first marriage ages 16 (ADD) 12 (AD/HD, anxiety) and 10 (no ADD at all). They are the light of my life and I spend as much time as possible with them. So, thank you again and I look forward to exchanging posts with you all.

Phil
