Going to Doc in a week, how do I obtain Adderall XR or Concerta?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to posting but I have been reading and learning from other threads for a few weeks. I was diagnosed with ADD in High School and was put on Adderall. My life turned around I I could actually function and complete tasks. How freeing an experience. But, once I moved and went to college I began ingnoring my meds and simply forgot about my ADD although it still affects me greatly. I am seeing a Doctor in a week in hopes of obtaining ADD medication again so I may continue to prosper in life. I know they are not cure-alls but they do give my mind a good kickstart to get my daily tasks done. I have read alot about Adderall XR and Concerta and I am interested in using one of these. What do I have to do to get my Doctor to prescribe me one of these meds (prefferably Adderall XR because I do not wish to experience the zombie feeling that many claim comes with Concerta). I ask what tips to use because in my area ( a college town) these types of meds are abused by the local kids and I want to know how I can obtain a script for myself without being hassled about if I am just using it for recreation. Please help. Any tips will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Getting tested for ADHD will make it possible to obtain a prescription. If you bring it up right off they will assume you are exhibiting "drug seeking behavior".

I was tested and diagnosed with ADD in High School. Do I need to get tested again?

Agreed, if you've been diagnosed in the past that will allow you to be eligible for a script now.

That said, each doctor is different. My Psych didn't test me again. However, when I first visited him a year or so ago he did some tests to see my level of anxiety and focus. It was a basic Q&A which I thought I did all to well. Well according to him I failed miserably and was diagnosed with acute anxiety as well as ADD, I was told I had ADHD as a child though. Through the years I guess the hyperactivity went away.

Be honest with your doc. Try not to come off as wanting meds, but at the same time let him know your frustrations and how you want your, "life", back.

What type of doc are you seeing?

Yeah you should be fine then. The doctor may suggest Strattera first.

Especially if you go to the on campus doc. Mine tried to push vyvanse on me, but apparently they don't have a PAP for people my age.

Re: Going to Doc in a week, how do I obtain Adderall XR or Concerta?

My Doc isn't on Campus and he is just my Primary Care Physician. Now, I was diagnosed with ADD when I was 17 and I am 22 now. Do I need to get my old paperwork from when I was diagnosed with ADD faxed to this office?
I'm really nervous and I have done all I can to get my life in order without medication but now I feel that I truly need that boost, I am not one to solely depend on medication but when I was on Adderall it made daily tasks get done so much easier and it helped me unclutter the mess of my life. It made me feel like a person. I am nervous because I have many, MANY tattoos and I usually get looked at in clinics as a freak, even by Doctors that I have seen, and I just don't know how to go about asking about meds without looking like a junkie. I even wear nicer clothes and shave when I see the Doc just so I don't get the looks and critisicm that I have mentioned. It is so hard. I want to make my life better and little things keep getting in the way when it comes to Doctors.

Since you said primary care physician, I'm going to assume you have an HMO. If you're afraid of coming off as drug-seeking, simply don't bring up the subject of medicine. Tell your doctor you'd like a referral to a psychiatrist so you can get treatment for your ADHD.

In my case, my PCP prescribed me Adderall. Since your case is somewhat similar to mine and you're in my demographic, I'll explain what happened to me. First, it took 2 visits to get my prescription. I didn't go in there and ask for the medicine. I went in there and told him I have been diagnosed with ADHD and that I would like to be treated for it.

He had knowledge of ADHD, so he explained the various medications used to treat ADHD and I discussed my Rx history, previous diagnosis, and all that. Even though I did have a previous diagnosis and had been on stimulants, he didn't prescribe anything. That first visit, he made me take a blood test to see if I had any health problems that might interfere with stimulants. When the results came back OK, I came in for a second visit a couple days later, where he then made me take some diagnostic test for mental disorders. Then he prescribed me Adderall, and referred me to a psychiatrist to follow up. It might be easier or harder for you to obtain Adderall. If you live in a college town (like Gainesville or Tallahassee), it'll might be harder. The doctor at my college won't even write scripts for ADHD medicine.

Get your medical records forwarded to your new doctor that way he can see you had a good treatment response to Adderall and it would be logical for him to prescribe it instead
of the possibly less effective non-stimulants.

re: 3

Get your testing records from your school or old doctor or wherever they would be held.

Contact your last high school to see what is in your school record file.

The Guidance Dept should be able to help you on that...

Re: Going to Doc in a week, how do I obtain Adderall XR or Concerta?

As I expected I was given some hassle. I told the doc my medical history, I had taken zoloft for depression before and dumped it all down the toilet and now refuse to EVER take an SSRI ever again because it created suicidal thoughts in my head. Never before had I ever had suicidal thoughts until I was prescribed Zoloft. No SSRI's for me ever again. I told him that I had been diagnosed with ADD TWICE and I also had a letter from my psych that said I indeed am ADD. The doctor tries to prescribe me Prozac. What the hell? It's like he wasn't even listening to me. I told him that I will never take an anti-depression drug ever again but he seems to think that my ADD symtoms stem from untreated depression. I told him about my success with Adderall in the past but the ******* would just not give in to prescribing me Adderall XR or Concerta. Damn it. I have tried depression meds wiht extreme failure and ADD meds with extreme success yet he still will not prescribe it. It's hilarious. If I was trying to simply get drugs then I wouldn't be spending 150 bucks on a doctor's appoinment. Trying to get help has never been so hard. The one time I'm trying to change my life for the positive and the people that are supposedly there to help do not help at all.
All in all, I'm angry.
Any suggestions?

Maybe try seeing a counselor? When I first set out for a diagnosis I called around my area and made sure I found a counselor that worked with people who had ADD. After I saw her several times and she recommended medication I called around my area for a doctor who treated ADD'ers. Then I went in and received meds with no hassle at all. You just have to find a good doctor who will listen.

You went to your primary care manager, right? You need to get a referral to a psychiatrist. With your medical records indicating a diagnosis of ADHD, you shouldn't have any major problems getting medications. Depends on the doctor's philosophy, of course.

If you're not satisfied with your treatment by your PCP, go elsewhere. There's no use wasting your time and hard-earned money on a doctor who isn't responding your needs you adequately.

Re: Going to Doc in a week, how do I obtain Adderall XR or Concerta?

Go to a psychiatrist - tell them you don't do well with NRI's (i.e. Strattera, Wellbutrin) or SSRI's (i.e. Zoloft) and that your ADHD is best treated with stimulants (particularly amphetamines - i.e. Adderall, Vyvanse, etc.). If you have been clinically diagnosed with ADHD, you shouldn't have to worry about being labeled as a 'junkie looking for drugs'. Of course, YMMV.
