Unhappy About to apply for disability :( I can't believe its come to this..

Many of you know me from my posts about my job issue I had in 2006 - I lost my job Sep 19th and can't seem to get motivation again to get a job.

This job I had for 4.5 years was the best job I ever had and the one I held the longest. It was one I had been doing for a long time and needed a change, but since loosing it and seeing where I am - I wish I could have it back. I was fired and its a long story, but I haven't been able to feel motivated about getting a job anywhere and I sent off for disability forms to fill out - they have arrived - it will take 3-4 mo to see if I am approved - but right now things are tight and I have to try.

I guess that's all you can do is keep on trying regardless of the outcome and good luck with applying for disability too.

Re: About to apply for disability :( I can't believe its come to this..

Here's another question?...do they have employment agencies in California and if so have you possibly considered visiting one?? in Australia they have several different employment agencies and among them are ones specifically for those with disabilities and "disorders" ranging from physical impairments such as Spina Bifida, Deafness, psychiatric issues right down to anxiety disorders, ADD/ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders etc etc, maybe that might help you as you can discuss your skills and experience and they might be understanding of your situation and might try to help you but along with that YOU need a positive attitude!!

Re: About to apply for disability :( I can't believe its come to this..

Disability is there for people who really need it, it is not something you should feel ashamed of it is necessary, it is a process and it is miserable, but if you really are disabled then that is something that society offers to you because you are incapable of working or keeping a job for very long.

when you were working you paid taxes, so that those who could not work could get by. now that you can't work, it's just your turn to eat some pie. it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Re: About to apply for disability :( I can't believe its come to this..

You've been out of work since September 2006? Apply for disability benefits now. Don't procrastinate... There's a long lead time with the federal Social Security disability program. (You can expect your claim to be denied at least once. S.O.P.) There's no reason why you cannot continue to look for work and pursue disability benefits. Ironically I have found with my state's Vocational Rehabilitation program that they assume you are on disability. Paying the rent etc. is your problem.

As a 40-something male who was recently dismissed from his job the prospect of joining the 13% of my demographic who have "jumped ship" and gone on disability increasingly looks like a regrettable option. There is little future for us in this economy...

Re: About to apply for disability :( I can't believe its come to this..

I have the papers - yes its a lot of forms I am going to slowly take my time and read them and fill them out - if it takes me a month to send them in - be it - I am going to make it clearly submitted - no mistakes. I would plan to be on it for only a year, my step mother was once on disability as well for a year - she is a nurse practitioner and she has had some depression in the past. She is a fully functional working person although the year of disability did help her out a lot.

Re: About to apply for disability :( I can't believe its come to this..

I am also thinking of doing this as well as filing for chapter 7 BK (if I am unemployed for six months and show zero income) as well as applying for student loan discharge because of 'Hardship'.

The hardship is I cannot get a job because I have been fired from so many jobs, I don't have those '3 professional references' that are necessary to get a job anywhere.

I discussed this with the psyc doc and his advice was to see a vocational counselor to help me with my career path. That is nice but it won't get me a job. As we all know, in the USA it is impossible to get a job unless you have exact experience, stellar experience & professional references. The thing is that if I addressed these issues of ADHD & Anxiety which killed my concentration & distracted me, I could probably be making in the six figures now.

Employment agencies WILL NOT help you unless you have a stable work history.

The job market now is really a tale of 2 extremes (at least in the NE & NYC area). Fields like finance, accounting, law, construction are booming and there aren't enough people But if you have that less than perfect work history, you cannot find a job. I get more calls from recruiters & companies than I can return, but I cannot get a job offer.

Hi Nick! You could always walk dogs! I have been fired from or quit every single office job I have ever attempted to do. And, believe it or not, you can make a very decent living.
