Thumbs down Anyone have some advice for me????

Hiii

I have been doing my driving lessons for quite a while, and failed my test twice.

i have a new driving instructor now who says i am good at driving but i do everything tooo fast... like the steering wheel, the gears, the way i turn, and leave most things till last minute and i will fail my test if i do everything too fast like i am doing

I really want to pass because its annoying getting public transport and not being able to move about myself when i want.

is there any tips or anything i can do to calm me down?

manythanks..

Alanna

Since you use the words "calm down" I will assume for the moment its mostly anxiety. Interesting benzodiazepines cause a number of cognitive deficits but
may enhance visual-spatial abilities. Which maybe the primary kind of ability needed for driving and acutely damaged by anxiety.

References for some of that can be found in that thread.

Since your in the UK and it might take forever till your next doctor visit you might could try herbal remedies:

1. kava kava
2. decaffeinated green tea (4 or more cups I would think).

I would go to your doctor before taking ANY drugs. Even a simple thing like kava kava is a drug capable of slowing reaction times. This is especially true if it's your first time using the drug and you don't know the effects or your body is just being introduced to it.

We want you alive. So please talk to your doctor first.

Re: Anyone have some advice for me????

Yeah ideally you should check everything out with your doctor. Thats a problem with a health forum. It makes posting any replies pointless when the best advice is see a doctor. In the future I will add more references to everything I say and provide all the disclaimers to keep the lawyers happy.

Re: Anyone have some advice for me????

GET A SLOW CAR!

Then the best thing is experience in that car...... with a few scary surprises thrown in. That's usually whats needed to slow people down so that they can be AWARE of whats going on around them. ..... situational awareness is the current buzzword I think.

It's actually quite difficult to appreciate just how fast things go wrong until it happens. The examiners will keep on failing you until they deem you safe to drive, taking drugs of whatever sort won't work...... understanding that people are soft, squishy, stupid, easily damaged and difficult to spot probably will.

If you've been diagnosed with ADD you're probably at higher risk of being involved in an accident, unfortunately for those outside the metal box... you're more likely to come out unscathed than they are.

The standard driving instruction isn't usually that good.... when I was learning to drive I was lucky enough to get a "job" driving a friend of my parents to and from work... covering about 50 miles a day...every day, both rural and urban. At the time I thought the advice I was being given as I drove was the sort of stuff every learner gets.... it was over a decade before I discovered I'd been given a fairly solid grounding in advanced defensive driving techniques.

Over the years I have had a couple of reasons to thank my lucky stars for those early insights into spotting nutters and staying alive.

Re: Anyone have some advice for me????

hehe though dont do what i did after failing the first time like u, which was i took every thing to slowly and failed for being over cautious it felt like i couldnt win, on the third attempt i just kept telling myself to stay calm and concentrated on regulating my breathing which helped a little

funnly enough i had no problems on my motorbike test i think as it wasnt as stressfull having some 1 talking in my ear and following behind than sat next to me as they do for a car test so i passed with a clean sheet
