looking for help in Austin, Tx

Hi.

I don't know if I have add or not, but I would like to find an answer. I recently read an account of someone with ADD and it was like reading my lifestory. It seemed to explain alot about me. He got help and I sure would like for the rest of his story to be as similar as the first part of it.

I am 47 and have no health insurance can anyone suggest a dr or clinic in Austin , Texas i can consult?

I will appreciate any referalls or suggestions.

Thanks

Wayne

Welcome to the Forum. I'm always happy to greet another Texan to the boards.

If you don't have them already, pick up copies of Driven to Distraction and Delivered from Distraction by Ned Hallowell & John Ratey. Half-Price usually has a copy or two.

Start here with a search for a doctor. You'll find that many ADD/ADHD specialists, and pdoc's, don't accept third party payments, so not having insurance should not be a problem.

Enjoy your stay here at ADDF!

Re: looking for help in Austin, Tx

I was referred to Gil Custer by my therapist...it took a few weeks to get an appointment with him, but well worth the wait. He spent two full hours with me before diagnosing me and sending me away with some med samples - enough for a month. The appointment wasn't cheap (around $400) but that's a pretty small price for validation and taking your life back - or getting it to begin with. He doesn't file insurance even if you have it, so don't worry about that. I think the follow-up appointments are around $175, but there will also be the cost of medication. I'm just paying cash for it all because I can't afford for any mental health stuff to show up on my crap insurance plan - I'm not sure if there are programs out there if that's a problem, but someone here may know.

(I'm in week 3 of the medication and things are definitely changing for the better - I'm not stuck or overwhelmed as much anymore, can focus so much more calmly on things that would have left me in a tizzy before...it was pretty daunting at first but has definitely been a great investment in myself!

Re: looking for help in Austin, Tx

Hi! I'm new and my name is Carrie. I was hoping someone here may be able to help me. I was recently a patient at The ADHD Place in Austin, Tx and unfortunately, my Doctor died recently. They are closing down the entire practice and I am having a really hard time finding a specialist that I can go to and get my medications from. I have a general practioner but she is unable to prescribe this. Does anyone have any suggestions. I would prefer to use my insurance. Thanks so much!

Re: looking for help in Austin, Tx

Your insurance company may be able to help you with this information - some times they have list of doctors that participate in the particular insurance plan.
