So... I'm retarded lol

I was talking to a friend of mines on MSN, explaining to him how to do his taxes (which took forever since he took forever to understand).

I was explaning to him about disability tax credits, bursaries and scholarships in relation to income tax. Then he said he can't be disabilied or he won't be able to become a police officer.

His exact words were 'I can't be retarded!'

I don't hide my disability from anyone, he knows about it. I tried to explain to him the advantages of having a LD or ADHD (hyperfocusing, out of box thinking, etc...)

He wouldn't listen, rather he wasn't able to understand it. After a while I gave up on him lol.

I'm finding this to be the mentality amongst most of the average crowd with a few exceptions. Makes me not want to disclose to anyone.

It scares me to think of this guy as a hiring manager for a company in the future. The future doesn't need his kind (ignorant)!

Re: So... I'm retarded lol

Well, it was nice of you to try and help him anyways. A lot of folks dont get it...disability is looked at as just another hand out. It took me off the streets...so (insert curse here) em.

I do not disclose to any one unless 1) They will be supportive 2)I am in the mood for a debate and think the may be able to handle it 3) medical history.

I don't see why you call your self retarded I find nothing retarded about this

Re: So... I'm retarded lol

I've pretty much called myself retarded for most of my adult life, along with other choice words. As far as can it be disabling....................extremely. But I would rather be a nice retart than selfish and ignorant.

Re: So... I'm retarded lol

Wait, we can get tax credits???

Lol. And you aren't retarded. But I understand because I call myself retarded too a lot of times. That's mostly because my stepdad used the term somewhat affectionately with us when we did something airheaded but he wasn't upset about it. We even had two dogs he loved and nicknamed "Re" and "Tard."

But seriously, you aren't mentally deficient. Promise.

Re: So... I'm retarded lol

When I worked with challenged individuals, it was considered acceptable to use "Developmentally Disabled" as a descriptive. Many of us wrote that as disABLED. it made more sense.

By making that statement, your friend labeled HIMSELF. At some point, life will invite him to buy a clue.

I think of ADHDers as "uniquely abled".

I tell people that I believe to be capable of understanding. Otherwise, I don't bother.

Never forget. "Normal" is just a setting on the washing machine.
Do you really want to be a setting on the washing machine?
If you do, wouldn't you rather be the spin cycle?

couldn't have said it better myself! I know I'm not retarded, the dude is just whacked.

I completely agree with the fact that ADHDers can do things that others "normal" people can't do and vice versa.

If you are in canada, not sure if ADHD is enuff to qualify, but LD is. $7k tax credits if you're over 18. If you're under then you get some money for support.

sorry dunno what dx is.

well your learning disability has to be severe enough. I know ADHD sometimes isn't enough to qualify.

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/t...ng.html#Mental

Don't be scared by this. Have your treatment doctor sign the form. I beleive my doctor wrote in there that I had Adult ADHD, Learning disabilities, and depression.

In addition to the yearly tax credits, they allowed me to go back 10yrs and claim tax credits for all those years. Since mines has been life long.

New things if you get approved by CRA:
