What's the difference? XR? IR?
First off, whats the difference between dexedrine and dexostrat? Secondly, what does IR mean? Whats XR mean? Which one's better? Why? Doc just gave me dexedrine but the dose is too low so i have to change it out anyway. I thought i'd ask these questions before i do though..

Re: What's the difference? XR? IR?
Generally: XR is extended release which I think in dex it is SR(spansule). IR is instant release.
I don't even think they make dextrostat anymore. I believe it was just a Shire brand name for dextroamphetamine Thank Vyvanse for that. I think... And which is better? Well, I think it all depends on how you react to it... which really goes for all medications. What dose are you taking? Barr brand, I assume? I think/hope this info is correct.

Re: What's the difference? XR? IR?
^^ You're right.
XR = extended release IR = instant release The XR medications come in capsules, which release half the dose right away and the other half 4 hours later, so one capsule should (theoretically) last about 8 hours. The IR medications come in tablets, which release the entire dose right away, so one tablet should last about 4-5 hours. Generally, XR takes longer to kick in but lasts longer. Like hsoJ said, neither is better than the other. It all depends on your personal reaction to the medication. I happen to prefer IR because I get fewer side effects and less of a crash when it wears off. It also gives me more control over my doses. But you'll find a lot of people who prefer XR. Dexedrine was the brand name of dextroamphetamine by GSK, and Dextrostat was the brand name of dextroamphetamine by Shire. Both of those have been discontinued in the IR form. The IR is only available as a generic by Barr. You can only get brand-name Dexedrine in the XR form now; those are called Dex Spansules. You really should be asking your doctor these questions though. In the future, when your doc prescribes something, say "What is it?" That will get you started. ![]() |

Re: What's the difference? XR? IR?
Hi Ruby85. I just wanted to say that when you said Dex Spansules should last about 8 hours (total), I had to laugh!!! LOL!! Seriously!!! I am living proof that these meds have different effectiveness/life span! I WISH my Dex Spans lasted 8 hours...they only last for 4 hours on me...Total! BOOOO! It stinks, but I just gotta take more.
