Question I only take 10 mg and have ?s

Hello everyone I just joined yesterday and am so happy to be here! (I have a longer intro on the intro page.)

I was dignosed last year but was nursing so I did not go on any meds at that time. Our insurance did not cover very much of a psch. visit so I just went to our family dr. for a prescription. (we had to pay quite a bit of $ last year for the diagnosis...) My family doctor was very surprisingly understanding and gave me a prescription for Strattera and told me to come back in a couple of weeks. However I think maybe he does not have very much experience with adult ADD and he only gave me 10 mg pills to take once a day. Now after reading more here I realize how low the dosage is and that most people slowly increase.

Even with such a small dosage I think it is making some difference. I seem to be able to get more done around the house. But I do not see any change in my ability to remember things.

What do you all think? Should I call the dr. and ask for a higher dosage? Any suggestions on how to approach it with him?

Thanks,
Lauren

Hmmm Even when I tried Strattera, I was started on 20 then increased to 40 in less than 2 weeks. So I would think 10 is kinda low. You could always mention this to your doc.....

About your ability to remember things? Even meds don't always help with that. I know this first hand. I can't live without a daily planner of some sort to keep track of schedules, etc. You may want to try that also. It helps a lot!

Wish you luck!

I took 40 for 4 days, 60 for 2 weeks and then 80 (40mgx2x/d). Seems like 10 is a little low. It does help me concentrate, but I still forget a lot of things. I am getting straightened out just in time for finals, YAY.

Thank you all. I called my dr. yesterday and I am now up to 20mm. I am glad I am going slowly because as I mentioned I often have strong reactions to drugs. Even just changing to 20 mm made me wake up for a few hours in the middle of the night. However over all it seems like I am one of the people who Strattera seems to help.

The dosage makes more sense if you consider your previous strong reaction to drugs. A certain percentage of people are "poor metabolizers" of certain drugs, which is due to differences in the enzymes that break the drugs down. As a result, a little goes a long way. The plus side is that your prescriptions are cheaper!
Glad to hear that Strattera works for you.
Regards,
Greg

Yes kitty it does get better. My son's pediatrician started him on 10mg's and left him at 10mg's. It took awhile for Dakota to get the full effect about a week but it's definatly enough for him. Don't be surprised if your doctor leaves your script at 10 mg's. and don't be surprised if you need a little more. It's better to start small and work your way up then to start high and work your way down.

Strattera and I now have a very nice 80 mg/day relationship. I am kind of surprised that 10 mg even does anything... I noticed a little effect at 40 mg and started having annoying side effects at 80 (which have since gone away). Wellbutrin, OTOH, hit me a lot harder, with both effects and side effects.

I weigh 195 lbs, so 1.2 mg/kg for me would be 100 mg. I'm sticking with 80 for now, though, unless my doc suggests going to 100.
