How does everyone deal with the "crash" effect from ADHD medication ?

Hi,

Just would like to know how everyone try's and deals with the crash effect after the medication wears out.

Though the sky looks dark and gray at the moment i'm trying to pass the crash by taking supplements
Vitamin B complex
L-tyrosine 500 mg x 2
Fish oil tablets 5 each containing 1.5g

I also exercise at the gym and do cardio walks and so forth

anything else that can help eliminate the crash ?

I contemplate flushing them down the toilet for about an hour.

I've been lucky so far with the crash but last night I fell asleep about 4 times just sitting on the couch....finally gave up and went to bed.

I've used exercise but also find sometimes if I just go ahead and crash for 20 minutes I get over it. Sort of depends on the day. Sometimes I can't crash at all and am still awake at midnight.

I just open up a computer game and slip comfortably into hyperfocus... seems to do the trick.

Hyperfocus is apparently linked to abnormally low levels of dopamine across the frontal lobes, so maybe the dopamine drop from a Ritalin comedown makes it easier to hyperfocus? Well thats how it seems to feel to me.

Re: How does everyone deal with the "crash" effect from ADHD medication ?

Hi Matthew20:

Do you mean when the med wears off for the day, or do you mean when you run out of the prescription completely and have no more to take? If the former, my Doc prescribed Trazadone and Klonapin. Traz is a anti-depressant that helps with sleep, and helps with some anxiety and relaxation. Klon. is a benzodiazepine that helps me relax and sort of ride out the crash. However, there are some days when the crash symptoms break through the medication treatment, and I understand what you mean about the depressive come down. I will say that exercise does help sometimes, and other times I just ride it out. However, the benefit from the add med far out weighs the times when I crash.
If you are feeling like you are crashing and/or coming down while you are still on the med, I mean when it should still be active in your system, you should probably talk to your Dr. to see if you need a dosage adjustment or maybe an additional med or a different one. I was lucky that the first I tried, adderall IR, worked really well. I tried Strattera, took it for two months, and it didn't do anything. Neither did Vyvance. Just my experience.

Hope all of this helped.

Esskay

I don't know but here's the feelings so far

1) When I sense that they're starting to wear off I get an urge to re-dose, that doesn't happen in the evening though

2) I feel really good about people noticing improvements while I'm on the meds

3) I'm not too entirely comfortable with needing stimulants to please people/tolerate repetition

4) When it wears off I have a feeling like I have two different personalities, even though they aren't really different

So far, it's no fun and I don't like it at all.

I took em ~20 minutes ago and just had to go to the bathroom because of nausea and puked. (edit: wow took 10 minutes to puke an empty stomach) That's a first.

They work when active, though... I just don't think my body/brain wants them.

I dont crash, I cruise and then I sleep. I take dex, but small (2.5 mg) regular doses as required.

Re: How does everyone deal with the "crash" effect from ADHD medication ?

I try to time the crash to a more manageable part of the day. My med lasts about 12 hours, so taking it at 7am means I'm coming down around 7pm--which is right in the middle of dinner usually. Now I take it at 10am, so it wears off about 10pm, which is after the kids bedtime and I'm usually doing nothing. I'm usually functional enough in the morning not to take it until 10am.... usually.

Re: How does everyone deal with the "crash" effect from ADHD medication ?

What ADHD medication are you taking?

I feel less of a crash on the extended release form of Adderall. The crash I experienced from taking the quick-acting Adderall was the worst. This deepened sense of moroseness would suddenly descend upon me and I would either have the urge to take another Adderall or find a gun and shoot myself in the face. Switching to the extended release form was the only thing that helped me deal with the crash effect.

Re: How does everyone deal with the "crash" effect from ADHD medication ?

I have never experienced much of a crash ... The only crash I feel is the return of my appetite that occurs when the Adderall wears off. I can go through some days not very interested in food ... and then all of a sudden, bam, I want to eat.

Talk to your doctor about this. That's what they are for: to help strategize and make adjustments. Just describe your experiences in as much precise detail as you can.

You may or may not benefit from a small evening dose of a med ... or you might need to eat better ... or get more sleep ... or exercise ...or adjust the timing of your initial dose of medication ... Lots of options to try.
