ADD,:Concerta, SNRI,?about norepinephrine and ADD on science level

My ADHD wasn't diagnosed until 2006, I was put on effexor XR about 2004, I was depressed, but anyone would have been in the situation. I was a full-time firefighter/paramedic. I broke my back at work in late 2003. Before the injury I was a total gym rat. I worked out 365 days a year. Sometimes when stressed twice a day. I knew that working out had alot to do with my mental health at the time, I just didn't know exactly why. I went to psychologist and psychiatrist for the first time in my life. I told the psych that I just NEEDED to be able to work out again. I told him I didn't think it was just depression. Before my injury I never had any problems with depression. I told the psychiatrist may times that not being able to work out had alot to do with my current emotional state, but he didn't seem to really care what I thought. I had no idea about or suspected Add. Well the effexor did seem to help some. I hashed it up to me being wrong. Two years later "it wasn't working anymore".
Long story short: I was diagnosed with ADHD, but never taken off the effexor.
My question is, how does nor-epinephrine(sp) play a role in a ADHD mind. Is it possible the SNRI is inhibiting my potential in some way. What about the serotonin issue and how dopamine is apart of all this mix. I have a need to understand this at a more scientific level, but not at the molecular level. I was a medic for ten years. I have some medical knowledge, and an over all good understanding of the human mind and body. Any info or direction to info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

Here is a primer on brain function and nurotransmitters with comments on how certain drugs affect the transmitters...I just cannot tell how up to date it is.
