anyone experience this side effect with Adderall?

I was just diagnosed with adult add recently and Dr. started me on adderall XR...within 4 days I was noticing a positive change but unfortunately I also noticed thick congestion deep in my lungs when I took a deep breath. I did not have a cold so I immediately suspected the adderall. I did not take it the next day nor did I have any thickness in my lungs. That being said, my Dr. switched me to Focalin but I did not like it at all...not any positive effects...it was just like I was in a major fog.

All this being said, I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this side effect and if so, is there any other med that is working for you? I have another call in to my Dr. to ask him about Vyvance? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Re: anyone experience this side affect with Adderall?

I get it somewhat sometimes. But its because I smoke.

Its caused by the the fact that amphetamine is a bronchial dilator, and it can affect your threshold for coughing. From there you can deduce that things simply get into the lungs and end up there where mucus is produced and somehow it affects the "elevator" which removes it.

That's the simple explanation. Your going to find it happens more often when you take high doses. Adjust your dose down and see if that helps. I've found that in some people the best dose may really be 5mg then 5mg 3-4hrs later. Try it one day - you'll be hopefully, happily surprised like many people.

Re: anyone experience this side affect with Adderall?

Thanks so much for the info/advice! I am going back to the Dr. this morning and talk to him about taking lower doses throughout the day instead of 20mg.xr. Hopefully that will be better! I was beginning to think that I was the ONLY one with this reaction to adderall!
