Ten Years Ago Today

Myself and LostInTheStars were married. Who would have known then what a place like this would come to mean to us. Thanks to everyone involved in this place for helping us get past our 8th anniversary, the roughest we ever had. Learning about ADD, and coming here with others like us, means the world to us.

So, thanks from both of us!

Mike & Jenny

Lol, I didn't forget, but actually we didn't get each other anything, in the traditional sense. I've done the big diamond ring thing, even had her a custom made wedding set. But we kind of talked over the last year, and our gifts to each other this year are different. We decided that we'd work hard to improve our lives instead of buying material things. I got our finances under control, and I have also got us both working out regularly, which helps our physical help, and helps me ward off depression. Those things are what matter.

That said, we have bought little things for ourselves. We did buy season tickets to our favorite local football team for the first time. We are also going to plan a few mini-vacations when the weather gets warmer. Being self-employed, we lose money every day that we don't work, on top of whatever we spend on vacation, so it is hard to get away much.

We work together every day, and are together any other time as well. So, we have done things to make that time together better from here on.

Are you SURE we're not identical twins separated at birth? Everything you said above, ditto for me the past year.

But you did buy/make her a card, right?

If this was a year ago (pre-diagnosis for me), I would say that you're a strong man for being with your wife 24/7...as I worked at the same small company with my wife for 8 years...and for resisting or "breaking" the societal cliche' of "How can you work with your wife everyday?" But now that I've been diagnosed and being treated, I would DEFINITELY have to say that I'd have no problem working with her now...you see things in a much different light!

Let me just say that after reading many of your posts, you ARE quite the shining example of not just a good, but a GREAT husband is!

Re: Ten Years Ago Today

Well, I wish we could have enjoyed it more, but we had to work today. Not only did we have a new customer to clean a house for, but their house turned out to be really, really, REALLY dirty, so it took twice as long as it should have for the first cleaning. Then we had another house to clean, and a Land Rover to detail. So, we worked today from 9:30 this morning, getting home with some dinner we picked up at close to 9:00 tonight. Needless to say, enjoying today isn't likely to happen. We are both absolutely beat.

It was to be expected though. It is the life we lead. We are looking forward to being able to enjoy this weekend, though we have to detail a car on Saturday. Sunday is supposed to be nice, and we will enjoy that day anyway.

Nope, no card. We buy each other cards or make them ourselves at times when they are unexpected, not really doing it when it is expected as the "norm". Not just to be different, but we'd rather do it because we want to, not because we feel compelled to.

We did make lists of our ten favorite things we did over the past ten years, and reminisced a bit. We also looked forward to where we'd like to be after the next ten years in life, just dreaming a bit together, and giving ourselves something to shoot for.

We worked together for about 8 years before we were both diagnosed. We started working together all the time, and after about 6 years of that we split ways a bit, to allow me the chance to pursue some of my ideas or interests in business, but still worked together most days. Now we're back to working together every day, and I don't see that changing. Learning about our ADD has given us that back.

I do try to be a good husband. I was given a horrible example by my own dad. So, I was determined not to be what I watched growing up. Thanks for noticing.

On the other hand, let me say that my wife is a great wife as well. She is one of the hardest working people, not women or men, but people, that I know. She has a wonderful disposition, and wants me to be happy, as I want her to be. Since learning about her own ADD issues, she has truly claimed her life as her own and is really getting involved so much more. She's learned that she has to find her own way of doing things, and it has given her a lot more confidence and success. It is so cool that now my wife can stand up and point out to me when I'm going off course and be involved when decisions are being made.

The last 1.5 - 2 years of our married lives have been the best of the 10. Now we know who we are, we know what we face, we know who each other is, and can work on things correctly with much more success. We've really kind of grown up together in ways.

Well, gotta run. Just taking a minute to reply while my wife is getting some things ready for work tomorrow. I'll be so glad to get to this weekend, because this week is killing me. Cleaning is hard work physically, and we're just worn out. Not exactly how we wanted to spend our tenth anniversary, but although the anniversary is technically one day, we plan on celebrating all year in various ways.

Mike
