Re: Memantine experience so far....

hey gimmebreak

recommend - getting the BP under control before adding memantine, the problem is that memantine augments the stimulant medication (but does not necessarily cause increases in BP)

so I'd feel more comfortable if you got the BP under control, and balanced out lifestyle (++ exercise, diet etc) now with that said, I don't see why you couldn't start a trial of memantine at 5mg, for 2 weeks to see how you do in terms of symptoms and blood pressure, but you'd need to monitor those fairly closely....

Re: Memantine experience so far....

By the way... why did you have to increase up to 20mg Memantine? Is memantine actually potentiating the adderall or is it hindering tolerance (stupid question - by blocking C++ channels at a 100hr halflife you're doing both right?)? But what happens to the Adderall effectiveness if you were to stop the Memantine?

Re: Memantine experience so far....

well it prevents tolerance, and increases the effectiveness.

Memantine dosing anywhere between 5-20mg works for some people, but it depends on the person.

Re: Memantine experience so far....

I'm getting tired of the ups and down of Ritalin, so I'm wondering if Memantine can work well as a solo medication for ADHD, depressed mood, and anxiety?

Does Memantine have any PNS side effects? (relating to the heart/heart rate)

Re: Memantine experience so far....

How does Memantine as a solo medication compare Vs. regular ADHD stimulants?

I'd like to know, since I want to talk with my Doctor about it.

Does it help with Anxiety?

It does nothing. It reduces tolerance like other NDMA antagonists, but I noticed no effects besides what I would attribute to be placebo. If you get a neat placebo effect though, go for it! If it works it works.

Re: Memantine experience so far....

Naussica

you're absolutely right, results vary greatly with any medication

but I wouldn't go so far as to say placebo....there are quite good validated studies to demonstrate efficacy for a varying degree of mental illness, as well as ADHD.

Nate- It does help with anxiety, I find the most, when combined with an SSRI, as it seems to augment, and provide a sense of calm. I know it really reduced my anxiety around learning, which has made a big difference for me in medical school when we're swamped with information, some necessary and others not.

Regarding your question about solo memantine, it has been trialed that way, and It does work, but the extra boost is when combined with a stimulant.

Re: Memantine experience so far....

For me it had almost no cognitive effect. My results are subjective, and probably will not be the same as others. I know some people have taken high dosages and have had experiences that I would rather not have, but to me this does nothing in the 5-10mg range, where I stayed at.

Re: Memantine experience so far....

i messaged a forum member about this (in vain, apparently -- no reply), so I hope this hasn't already been discussed. Forgive me, but I don't have the time, -- and of course, I don't have the attention span, -- to sift through the pages of this post, which is obviously very hot.

Has anyone heard of ProMeta? I saw it on Sixty Minutes a while back.

ProMeta is supposedly an extremely beneficial treatment for methamphetamine addiction.

ProMeta spokespersons claim that their drug, which is a combination of three (seemingly random) FDA approved prescription drugs, has shown to reduce withdrawal symptoms, -- including cravings, lethargy, and dysphoria, -- in methamphetamine addicts.

Word around the campfire is that ProMeta repairs the brain structures that have been damaged by methamphetamine abuse.

So, believe it or not, this is what ProMeta consists of:

Hydroxyzine, gabapentin, and flumazenil.

i may start a new thread, but i figured it was worth comparing to Memantine.

but i mean, what the heck? Hydroxyzine = antihistamine. Gabapentin = a GABA analogue. and Flumazenil = a GABA antagonist.

I mean, I know pharmacology is complex, but even on a deeper level.

this doesn't make sense.

Re: Memantine experience so far....

I have another shot to ask another Doctor about Namenda tomorrow.

I really hope this Doctor will actually listen to me. I want to have a better memory and lucid thought for once and for all.

Re: Memantine experience so far....

Finally prescribed Namenda!

I will take it tomorrow in the morning after breakfast as my only medication and see how I react to it.

Great! Good luck on memantine.

I haven't had a chance to talk to my psychiatrist yet, I have to wait a week or two.
