OK. This would help with any anxiety, and could enhance your overall awareness, I think it's definitely something you could approach your doctor for.

Re: Memantine experience so far....

I'm a week into 5 mg Memantine and still feeling foggy, dizzy, spaced out in the mornings. Yesterday was so bad I almost went through a red light and rear ended another car. At work, I was just starring at the computer screen....unable to get a grip of myself and get focused. Will this ever fade away? I love how it greatly reduced my anxiety and even depression now, reminds me of Lexapro but I can't go through life in a trance.

@425

What other meds are you taking?

When do you take the Memantine?

How far apart have you gone before stopping and restarting....

**this happened to me when I first started taking it, I had to take about 7 days off, then restart it and take it properly for it to go away**

Re: Memantine experience so far....

@surferdude123

No other meds, besides Vyvanse 50 mg and the Memantine. The weirdest thing happened tonite, I took my 2.5 mg, got a headache so I took advil and now I feel great! Lots of energy, ready to take on the world don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight...I feel wired and hyper.

I take a lot of supplements though, nothing extraordinary besides sulbutiamine, fat soluble B-1 analogue which acts as a nootropic, energy booster and N-acetyl l-tyrosine to restore my DA/NE levels.

@ 425. my advice for what it's worth........

come off all psychotropic medication except for a stimulant, memantine, and an SSRI if you are on one.

The L-Tyrosine is monkeying things up for you.

That's my suggestion.

For supplements, take a good multi with Vitamin B complex and Fish oil, that's all you need.

Re: Memantine experience so far....

Hey all

So I'm 30 days in (7 days at 15mg dose) and I noticed a really big difference from the 10-15mg increase. Mood is much better, stimulants even more effective, anxiety lower. Very positive so far. Will give you all a more complete update at the 45 day mark one I've stabilized on this dosage. Surfer how long would you recommend I stay at the 15mg level?

Thanks and have a great day

Re: Memantine experience so far....

Great, will stay at 15mg for awhile and see how things go...

On a separate note (and I hope this is not too much off topic);

Do you think that playing with DA levels over the long term via memantine and stimulants may increase our risk for getting neurological diseases such as parkinsons (which I believe is related to dopamine) and/or alzheimers? Or could memantine actually protect us somewhat?

I have read very mixed things online, nothing really conclusive - and to be honest, even if there was a small risk down the road, my quality of life has improved so much using medications that I would probably take some chances regardless (within reason of course). It usually comes down to risk/reward - quality of life VS long term effects.. And I know that with some medications, there are long term health risks..

But that being said, I am sure you are more familiar than myself when it comes to actual studies and was curious what your thought process is on this (especially considering you're on mem + stimulant)..

Thanks

Re: Memantine experience so far....

Hanz -

Great to hear it's working for you! Unfortunately, I haven't experienced any positive effects - just feeling dizzy, spaced out, weak, horrendous headaches and extremely tired so I'm getting off.

I guess it's not for everyone. Going back to Mg Citrate and Agmatine.

sorry to hear that, but I still feel the bulk of your problems were the dosing schedule, and all the other nootropic medication you were taking as well.

Best of luck!

Re: Memantine experience so far....

@hanz

There is no evidence (that I know of) that DA medications can contribute to parkinson's.

However, I've read studies that Memantine, and SSRIs are shown to be Neuroprotective.

The neuroprotective methods are related to Serotonin, Mitochondrial Damage, Neuronal Plasticity and Neuronal remodeling. Even Strattera (Atomoxetine) has been shown to have positive benefits in stroke patients (2007).

Memantine specifically helps to prevent damage from excessive NMDA channeling, Ca+ imbalance, and has proven benefits against amphetamine recovering addictions.

While I don't know FOR SURE (100%) if in the long-run we are ok, I, myself am provided with some relief that Memantine has been around since the late 60s....and it does have a very low side effect profile (as posted earlier)

Hope this helps!

Take care!

Re: Memantine experience so far....

You are right, doc, but I just need to get my life in order and take care of other health issues first before I embark on the "Mem" journey again. I'll follow your advice next time and eliminate all psychotropic meds/supps before starting the Memantine.

It certainly has its benefits, no doubt about it as others have commented how much calmer I've become.
