Adderall and Eating

Hey! So I just starting taking Adderall today (20mg), and I knew before taking it that it curbs appetite; that was the first and most immediate side effect I registered. What I was curious about, however, was that not only do I not have an appetite, but when I do eat (I know that on this drug it's good to keep regular eating habits despite a lack of appetite) the food makes me feel nauseous. I don't get nauseous at the thought of eating food nor does the smell of food affect me. It's only when during the act of swallowing food that I get this urge to throw it back up, slightly like a gag reflex. I can, however, push past the urge and continue eating the food but I still get the feeling at every bite (thus I don't eat as much of my meal as I normally would). I was wondering if anyone else experienced this side effect and if it's something that decreases or goes away once my body has gotten used to the medicine (much like how the feeling of "euphoria" most people experience when first taking Adderall slowly fades with time).

Re: Adderall and Eating

When I first started taking it I felt the exact same way. Actually I get like that every once in a while still. The EXACT same feeling. I don't have that feeling with this sandoz generic I only have it with BARR. Which brand are you taking?

Re: Adderall and Eating

The cor generic made me feel that way as well. I prefer BARR or COR. Also if I eat breakfast early and take my med by 9 am then when lunch comes around I can tolerate food better. I usually just take it when I first wake up so I am nauseated most days but my concentration is better. On this sandoz generic I got this month I have not felt nauseated at all but It also doesn't effect anywhere near the same. (explanation in my other post)

Re: Adderall and Eating

I believe the reason why this happens is because Amphetamines pull blood away from different parts of your body and pump it to your vital organs. Your stomach has blood pulled away from it and sent to other parts, which makes it difficult for it to carry out its function. It has less to do with generics and more to do with the actual chemistry of Adderall. Don't quote me on this one but I believe it's something along those lines.

It's an interesting idea! Thanks for your input! And I'm sorry, krb388 . I hope that side effect subsides for you soon!

Re: Adderall and Eating

I haven't been on it long (two days) and I haven't noticed a change in the taste of food...just the gag reflex thing. Many people seem to experience the "loss of appetite" side effect differently, or that's at least what I have seen so far on the forum.

Re: Adderall and Eating

Dexedrine and Vyvanse doesn't have this effect.

Start stocking up on protein shakes and liquid foods, they're much easier to consume. Or you can smoke some weed and that makes it go away for the duration of that high.

When I had Adderall and nothing else, I would skip meals entirely, wait till the effect was over then binge on foods. However, eating a breakfast with it will make it weaker (the adderall isn't absorbed as much I believe) and make it easier for you to eat.

I have a horrible metal kind of taste in my mouth. Also cotton mouth, and pain in side all day. I tried eating but I just get nauseated and chew the same peice forever before swallowing. I am going to try and eat again right now.

Maybe its just the kind I have bought but I have trouble drinking them by time im half way through with my drink its warm.

Does anyone have a good brand of protein or vitamin drinks they recommend? I really need to find one that works, then I wouldn't have to gag down vitamin pills eww.....

If i were to smoke weed.....wow.... I would probably be in serious trouble.(All the other side effects other than appetite would agitate my ADD.)

Re: Adderall and Eating

In the morning after taking my first dose I drink one of those instant breakfast packets and usually eat a cereal bar or a piece of toast. The instant breakfast helps to give me a feeling of being full even through the lunch hour. I don't really notice a metal taste, but the dry mouth definitely makes it hard to eat if I don't have a giant glass of water to drink with it. I also eat a lot of bananas which is very strange to me. I have never really liked them for as long as I can remember, but eat them all the time since I started taking Adderall 2 months ago. Not too long ago I found a couple other posts where bananas were favored. I find that really interesting.
