Thumbs up Strattera and No Desire to Smoke

When I was in University I smoked a bit- especially when I went to bars-which was a weekly event. As I have gotten older I have really wanted to stop. It is no problem in my normal life, but whenever I go out with friends who smoke I had the overwhelming desire to smoke and usually gave into temptation.

The first time I went out after starting Strattera I noticed I did not have the urge to smoke even though my friends were. The overwhelming desire simply was not there.

I am certainly happy with this unexpected side effect- has anyone else had this experience?

Lauren

Wellbutrin is used for quitting nicotine. I think Straterra works on the same neurotransmitter neoprenephrine (sp?) and others so that makes sense.

Perhaps it's the improved impulse control? I know that's a big benefit of medication for me - but in my case the addiction is to food and not nicotine!

168,

Why do you think that is? Is it to calm anxiety? Heck, if I was facing the Bar Exam, I would probably have taken up smoking too! lol

Funny thing Big, I used to smoke less than a pack a week. Now I am up to 2 packs a day. Bad I know but I made a promise to myself that I will quit once I pass the BAR.

I don't drink anymore- maybe the meds have some affect on addictions. I think this is a good thing - in a way.

Just keep your eye on the prize, 168....once you're done with the Bar...then you can focus on quitting smoking (or at least cutting back)

Now that I'm considering going back to nursing school in the near future I've looked into meds. Heck! I think this may be the perfect med for me.

Heh heh... I quit smoking shortly after I started Strattera, but I had planned to quit anyway. I didn't find my withdrawal any easier, but, maybe in retrospect, the fact I've been off cigarettes for nearly four months might indeed lend itself to some anti-smoking side effects of Strattera?

I quit drinking because of taking Strattera. The urge to drink five, let alone any drinks per day totally vanished.

That was a VERY welcome surprise.
