How many physc sessions did it take for you to diagnosed for adult ADHD in Aus (NSW)?

Hi,

Would just like to know, though I realise it may vary from doctor-to-doctor and patient-to-patient, how many sessions with the physc it took other Aussies here on the forums to get diagnosed with adult ADHD. (I'm from NSW). Also if you could give a brief summary what that process actually involved (Discussion of circumstances, past academic results, actual written tests, etc).. I really have no idea.

I finally stopped putting it off and got a GP referral the other day, but am now wondering if it's gonna be worth the time and cost to get diagnosed. The physc I got referred to has a long waiting list and is overloaded with patients apparently, so I am guessing if this type of thing takes several sessions, i could be waiting forever. I may go back to the GP ask for a referral to a different physc, but just want to know much time it may take and how money roughly I will need to pay the difference between the medicare rebate and the bill.

Really appreciate any answers you can offer for these questions..

I know that this is probably a bit late for you, but I'm is Sydney too and have just gone through the process.

The first appointment that I could get when I first talked to my GP about it was for 3 weeks later. Use the time to get your thoughts in order and written down.

It took only one 2 1/2 hour visit to get diagnosed, and was given a one month prescription for dexamphetamine. They only charged me for an hour for the initial visit. I paid $390, and received $209 back from medicare. You will have to allow for repeat visits to re-evaluate the medication and dosage, and to get new prescriptions. I'm not sure how many months of repeats you can get in one go.

I'm only at the start of my second week on the meds and so far for me it's been well worth it.

I've never been to Australia, but I can tell you that one of the biggest ADHD experts in NYC diagnose ADHD in less than 5 minutes.

Re: How many physc sessions did it take for you to diagnosed for adult ADHD in Aus (N

I was seeing a psychologist for 18 months and she never once mentioned that she thought I may have ADD. I was telling her about my son diagnosis so she gave me the 'hunter and the farmer' book to read. I identified with the symptoms and told her. She recommended a psych to see who specializes in adult ADD. I went to my GP for a referral. Then had to wait months for the initial appointment. It was about 1.5 hr (cost me over $500!) we talked about my history, my mum (I believe she has been misdiagnosed with depression and she has had 2 breakdowns). Then I did some questionnaires and he prescribed Ritalin and also suggested I see a coach (I still haven't!)

I had already done heaps of research to date. I told him about my schooling. Eg despite being bright at school with a A/B report card every year, I completely stuffed year 12 and ended up with C/D.

One thing that surprises me is that they don't bother to also check for other things along with the ADD. I am beginning to wonder if I am dyslexic or have auditory processing problems. I want to be treated as a whole! My doctor never mentioned any of this to me.
I only know about them because I do a lot if research.

That's similar to me. I've been in therapy since I was 11 (I'm bipolar) and been seeing my current therapist for about 18 months when she mentioned the possibility of me having ADD. I laughed at her, because it seemed silly, but finally got around to having an assessment at a place in Sydney that specialises in cognitive testing etc

Almost 6 months after my therapist mentioning it, I'm STILL trying to see a shrink about meds because my regular shrink isn't authorised to prescribe ADD meds and trying to find one that is and has appointments available takes forever and ARGH! So frustrating.

I didn't realize that not any shrink can prescribe ADD meds!

Can you please let me know where you did your cognitive testing in Sydney.

I'm not in NSW, but in an adjacent territory. Here you have to get diagnosed by two psychiatrists: they both diagnosed me on the first visit...

I saw a psychologist for 6+ months, ended with a psych referral to "test" for ADHD at my request. Ended with disappointment.
Searched the internet, found a GP who would help me, he sent me off to a psychiatrist which was basically a formality, and now the GP looks after my medication and state of mind, he is excellent. Hard to find thought.

Hi, Are you able to tell me the name of the Dr you saw? I'm desperate to get some help. The nearest appoinment I can get is March and waiting that long has big implications for me as I know it does for others.
Thanks in hopeful anticipation,
K
