Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I wanted to post this thread to see how many people actually am in the same shoes as me.
Does anyone feel that they behave a lot differently on the Internet verses their own real life? For example, you tell someone to "Shut up" On the Internet, but in real life you would never even do that! If you would please share your experiences. Thanks Everyone!

this one went over well with my colleagues: i am expected to attend a percentage of my department's colloquia (60-90 minute lectures, essentially, by visiting professors) annually. i push these off and ended up needing to attend one that was lackluster in both delivery and content. i realized it around 5 minutes in, but i *had* to attend. i'd finished chewing through all of my pencils, counting everything countable in the room, considering ways to divide up the minutes and trying to force myself not to look at the clock more than once per minute (not as easy as you might think...), etc, etc, etc. i was pulling out every trick i knew to occupy myself and just weather it. it wasn't even halfway finished and i was rubbing my eyes (and pretty much my whole face and head ) with my hands and thinking to myself, 'uuuhhh, get it together (insert my actual first name), you can make it through this...' i didn't just think it ![]() (yes, it was audible to most--including the speaker... yes, there was an extended moment of stunned silence as heads whipped around to look in my direction. all you can really say after that happens is, 'wow, uh, my apologies.' no, i had not taken my medication )

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I dont think I am much different online than in real life. Perhaps my anxieties and my shortish fuze show a little less online.
Unless I spend my time with fellow Adders. So perhaps in hindsight its not the environment but the company that makes the real difference.

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I think in general of the people I have met online first and then IRL...they were much bolder online. I think I have a tendency to be as well.

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I'm really animated in RL, I may only say a few words and get the idea across with a face or gesture of my hands. It's hard to do this onlline, so I may come accross as less talkative or expressive than I am in RL because it takes a lot of effort and time for me to write out what I want to say.
That's the only difference I can think of. As far as the person I am, I'm definitely the same. I'm not more or less outgoing or assertive because I'm online.

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I am less boystrous and less opinionated, but I have to be or I'd get locked up.
I seem to be using it alot for voicing opinions that are stuck in my head.....and my main problem with being in a forum invironment is i use it as a 'self-therapy',only noticed this after a good while of being here..... A moto of mine-if it's broken....fix it! ![]() I do not use the internet for anything else really....I am more likely myself when talking in private,as everyone.

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I think im a bit different online just because there's an edit and delete button >.> So I can take back or edit what I said.
Plus I can think about what I want to say and take my time replying to posts and messages, but IRL that wouldn't be a option I could use without looking rude >.< I also feel free here! ![]()

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I think I am pretty much the same online as I am in RL. Probably a bit more animated but essentially the same.
I know that there are people who see the internet as a place that they can express other aspects of their personalities freely, but I am not really one of them.

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I find it easier to express myself online then in RL. I have a hard time with words.. so it gives me a little bit of practice. =)

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I seem to have way more friends OL than in RL, BUT and it's a BIG BUT
![]() I have met up with people from 2 guitar forums for RL guitar-flavored weekends each summer in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. So my RL friends have multiplied and those GTs have definitely been very rewarding.

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I'm the same, just more articulate because I have time to figure out what I'm going to say, go back and edit it. . .I get flustered sometimes IRL if I get taken by surprise, or when people get emotional and I have to change the way I respond because of it.

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
Woo hoo...I am surrounded by truckdrivers all day long in RL. I have to be able to take crap and dish it out to get any kind of respect on the road. Kindness or courtesy is a weakness(not 100% of the time...but 95%,for sure). I've had other drivers pull dangerous practical jokes on me. I gotta show I can take it.
I also work for one of the most despised trucking companies out here,so I hear crap about that too. Shortages of parking spots, long lines at shippers, just plain dealing with traffic makes for a dog eat dog day out here. So I have to take my truck driver skin off and remember to BEHAVE when I come here. I know the proper way to act,and I never want to offend anyone...but if I get too lewd.crude or rude...please just give me a swift kick and I will come back around. ![]() Otherwise,I am pretty much a happy go lucky person who has a great time playing acronyms here with everybody!! ![]() |

Re: Behavuors Internet Verses Life
I don't generally socialise on the internet a lot.
It takes a lot for me to change from a lurker to a fully fledge poster. I've only ever done it once before and I ended up getting married. Either way, I'm incredibly different. If I'm honest about all the things I think and do in the real world I don't think I'd have a job and I'd worry my family. Here I can say them. |
