It's such a shame that only 1% of visitors make any contribution to the conversation.

If only some more would speak out because it would benefit everyone.

Are all forums like this? Is there anything that can be done to get people participating?

I think the problem here is the technical trouble the forum has, which means every time it goes wrong again (Andi and Andrew have no control over this, only David has control and he's not been here in a long time, sadly) some members don't return here because they see the forum's had another meltdown and it does not alert people when it's back up so people don't know when it's back up unless they keep trying to come here.

Last time it went wrong for a long period of time it was down for over a week and a lot of members didn't return from that

^ What Midsy wrote.

Also, somewhere I got the idea that a lot of those numbers actually represent
bots, not real people reading our posts.

Only members can post to the forum and participate in our conversations. That only leaves 10 people that could even contribute based on the stats in your thread title. We really need more active members!

If you look at where the guests are, the majority are in the medications section.

Re: 10 members and 1100 guests

Other social media formats have gained popularity over forums. There was a great car forum I was on. A true resource but then they started charging subscription fees and everybody left and went to facebook instead.

Yes, perhaps that serves as a guide to the most popular parts of the forum. If those guests would give us their point of view or experiences, we'd all benefit, including them.

@midnightstar

Your signature shows Willow as being a recent addition. Is that a new member of your feline family?

I have a black cat called Dave, he has his own instagram account where he lets his human (me) take pictures and videos of him.

Re: 10 members and 1100 guests

This format is good for getting some quick data on an issue that might be facing you, but if you're looking for lively back and forth with a lot of people, you would be better served looking for an ADHD group(s) on FaceBook.

I think most people see forums as very 2008.

Re: 10 members and 1100 guests

If there were a setting by which you had to login to see some sections that may increase participation however it would reduce the overall numbers to the site and therefore the advertising revenue. If the forum doesn't make enough money to break even it will die. Just commercial realities. The car forum I was on (same format as this) needed a revenue stream after the owner had a near death experience they decided they needed to fund it on separate servers rather than his so that if anything happened to him the forum would continue.

So a subscription fee was brought in and a lot of people left. But the forum still prevailled because new people came in. What I think actually killed participation was a long running hate thread that they refused to shut down, continued support of a business that was committing fraud and bullying by the moderators.

Most people leave groups because they have a falling out with someone (especially if it's someone in a position of power). They also leave when they don't like the direction of the group, when their friends have left and they cease to be getting anything out of it or when it just doesn't feel like a good place to be anymore.

There's a bit of advertising on here when you're viewing this forum as a guest, there's none viewable once you're logged in
