Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

I was kicked out of the class so many times in the 6 and 7th grade I was outside in the halls as much as I was inside. What hurt so much was that I really wanted to discuss ideas with the teacher and they just couldn't give a **** less about me.

6th grade teehheee:OI remember me an this kid gene in art class having an argument I told him 1 more word an hes getting a paintbrush up his nose.Just my luck teacher was walking down hall and heard it grabbed both of us by the wrist. This is the 80s she could still do this sort of thing.Brought us back to the class, gene was in 1 side of room and I wa sin the other he sticks his tongue out at me when teacher wasnt looking,so I took paint brush put it down by my crotch an jiggled it. pointing to it.The Aid or teacher turned around and UH OH thought I was doing it to her.I nearly got suspended for the last month of school because of that stunt.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

I had a wonderful woman 8th grade teacher who had me sit right by her desk. She believed in me and even though I didn't have the best grades she chose me as the class valedictorian. She also got me into enrichment class because of my stellar performance on the provincial exam. It didn't help that there was a hottie who would sit on her haunches right in front of me. What a great time that was.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

wow this is all so hard! I wish I had some kind of a teaching vocation so I could do something about it.

Well I was one of those inattentive daydreaming girls you read about. I wonder how many teachers knew at what point i was NOT paying attention.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

I think most girls are more apt to slip through the cracks from adhd because they are quiet and shy and unless there flunking left an right or dancing around on top of there desk an creating a stir in the class, most I think are left alone and just thought of as shy and whispy an girllike.THis wasnt intended as a sexist view either as boys can be more rough an tumble and are stereotyped alot as roughhousing troublemakers who cant settle down.I think when a teacher has a class of 25-30 the person thats creating a stir is causing the whole class to be intterupted and that person either has to settle down and fast or go hence the whole medicine thing.Because no 1 can learn when the whole class is interupted,I however dont believe kids should be punished are stuck in special ed to rot because some adhd kids are very very intelligent and spec ed hampers kids like this, puts a damper in there spirits so to speak.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

Sitting at the table closest to the teacher is working really well for my first grader. There are five other children there with him. She also (with my permission) assigned a "peer buddy" to sit next to him. He helps with reminders and instructions if needed.

It's been a great system for us!

Does your child have an IEP? (Individualized Education Program)

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

she doesnt have an iep as far as i know, but the school is aware of her problems and are supporting us getting her assessed next week, as the term has only just started they are watching and waiting as to see how she reacts in the juniors with her new teacher, she likes the teacher which is good and she seems to be approachable and fair. my daughter has already said she is already being told to go away in the playground by some of her friends and so we are trying to encourage her to take up the lunch time clubs so she will be a part of something rather than wondering the playground in her own.

my daughter isn't shy by any means, she is more like a boy with adhd i believe she has the combined type but she says to me she does daydream and lose concentration in the classroom when the teacher talks.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

That makes me feel sad when another child tells another child to go away.I was treated like this, shunned,I'd go to join the boys in the park for a basketball, football game and it seemed as I showed up it was over and they all split.I sometimes think this is 1 of the reason why adhd people eventually will abuse drugs or something because we are made to feel so poor about ourselves.Im still told Im annoying but when i ask Im told either I worry too much or think to far into things or some 1 cant give me a straight answer on it.I also think its a pecking order and sad to say but people are as stupid and ignorant about mental illness as ever.No tolerance avoid the things you dont understand, tell other people to avoid the freak, parents tell there kids I dont want you hanging out w johhny hes bad news. But its funny how they never bother to meet the kid or his parents or ask some questions we just get written off. There very well is a stigmatism w adhd, and BP and other stuff and its hasnt changed in 80 years,I cant wonder how this country or world has made it this far w all the dumb lack of common sense an stupidity going on.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

For some kids w/ADHD, the front of the class and near the area of the teacher's desk or the area where he/she teaches from is optimal. For some kids, this means they spend too much time turning around to look at what the kids behind them are doing. For some kids the back of the class is better because they can see the big picture without turning around in their seats. Also the back of the class can be good for physically active children who like to "sit" with one knee on the chair seat and one foot on the ground. Kids can even stand at their desks when they are restless if they are not blocking anyone's view. There isn't any one position of "preferential seating" that works for every child with ADHD, it depends upon what works best for the individual child, within what is reasonable for the smooth functioning of the entire classroom. Ladybumble, the occupational therapist may also be able to suggest other strategies like an inflated seat cushion (move n'sit, disco-sit etc) to allow your daughter to "wiggle" and get some stimulation, but still be in her seat.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

One of the recommendations for my son is to seat him near the teacher. As many have said, this is a little harder to do in some classrooms where the kids are grouped at tables and the teacher moves around alot. Having him close to her makes it easier for her to keep an eye on whether he is getting work done, check in with him to be sure he understood things, etc. Also, as she's walking by she can casually put her hand on his shoulder to get his attention or redirect him.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

There are a lot of factors to consider. The short answer would be that a student with ADHD should be given "preferred seating". This could mean different things in different classrooms. For some, it might mean right in front. For others who may need to get out of their seat and walk around the back of the classroom for a short break, it might mean the back of the room. I would hope the teacher has assigned seats though!!!!!!!

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

My son just told me he has been sitting at the back of the classroom with his desk turned around facing the wall. He told me he is not even allowed to to around and face the class during instruction time. Needless to say Im kinda upset about that. Its like hes being made to "put his nose in the corner" all day everyday. I sent an email and will be having a meeting tomorrow but when i get in there i get so upset nothing comes out right. I need to plan ahead what I am gonna say and also I want to be able to offer a solution of where he can sit that he wont be distracted or distracting other students. I think I will just have to go look at the classroom myself but I am thinking up front is where Ill ask her to move him.

Re: Should children with adhd be sat at the front of the class

Hi bowlofcherries

I had the same problem when I would go to the parent teacher meetings..Nothing came out right. Writing things down might be helpful.

Unfortunately sometimes with me I couldn't even read my own notes..meaning I could not speak not that the notes were illegible. Although usually they were quite messy notes. But I think that is the best way to go.

Write down everything you really want to say. Read it word for word to the teachers.

I hope you get your point across..your son is being mistreated.
