Music aversion

[Blue Paradox]

Ever since I was a kid, jazz music has made me very irritable. In particular, I HATE the sound saxophones make. HATE. Even if I don't realize it's playing in the background, I'll start getting very irritable for no apparent reason, until I recognize that the music is the problem.

Also, I like a wide variety of music, but there are some songs and singers that I really can't stand. For example, Macy Gray is one of those. If her music comes on, it MUST be changed or I will, again, get very irritable. I can't block it out. At. All.

I don't really understand it. I know other people that don't necessarily like some music, but can tolerate it. But some music elicits utter frustration from me. Does anyone else have this issue?

I hate elevator music or "the being on hold" music on a telephone...most of the time it's the slow jazzy kind.
It makes me feel sick to my stomach.

I'm not a fan of jazz either.

The music I hate is hold music that's too intense.

If I'm irritable already, it just puts me in an even worse mood. Woe betide the poor CSR who gets me on the phone.

Companies should really consider this for their customer service lines. Having been a CSR in the past, I know what it's like to get customers who have been on a hold for a long time who have been put through tension-heightening muzak.

I agree--I wonder how companies choose "on hold" music? Is it simply based on what everyone "thinks" is good "on hold" music, or has someone actually done a study showing that a certain type of music puts customers in a better mood...?
