Can ADHD be an enabler of professional success?
Hey guys,
I've been an ADHD sufferer since I was a kid. As I've learned about handling its issues, I've also come to realize that it gives me some distinct strengths. It took me writing it in my blog post this past week to fully comprehend how subconsciously many ADHD sufferers learn to play to the strengths and put themselves in environments and professions where it fits best. Like entrepreneurship. http://cebacosoftware.com/2010/10/is...r-or-disabler/ I also learned that I should be a lot more involved in the ADHD community, hence my coming back to this site. I'd love your feedback on my post and on the strengths you (or your children) get from the condition. Joel Last edited by meshugineh; 10-29-10 at 08:36 PM.. Reason: Bad title |

Re: Advantages of ADHD
Great post. Sorry, my meds are wearing off so I didn't read it with as much focus as I usually would.
I'm both impulsive and a details person. I actually did screw up a lot when I first put my telescope together. Now I have to stop myself and do things a step at a time so I don't destroy the whole thing. Sometimes I can be focused and sometimes I can jump from one thing to another. If I could list one advantage of my ADHD: it makes me very clever. I actually may elaborate on that in my next blog post. I've been thinking about personality types and how scarily accurate the one I fit is for me.

That's right folks, you heard it here first: LOOSEST SLOTS FROM HERE TO WOLF 359! I've also been experimenting with creating a nuclear powered cell phone. Don't you just get sick of charging your dang phone all the time? Well, now you don't have to ever again, and you can irradiate anyone that doesn't like it either. I'm still tinkering with the waste disposal methods though. While many people find it fashionable to go "green" these days, I've just decided to buck the trend and go "black." I mean, why waste your time buying carbon offsets just so you can wash your hands of mother earth and claim you're not part of the problem just like all the rest of us? Let's just skip to the chase, shall we? With my nuclear powered cell phones, you'll be able to eject spent nuclear rods from your phone every month! And if I can tweak it just right, my rods will be 1000% worse for the environment than any previous fuel by-products before it. My ADD has also caused some brain tumors, electrified my fingernails and teeth, and allows me to stare straight into the sun while still experiencing the same pain and blindness as everyone...wait, no, I guess there's nothing different about that. Did I also tell you my ADD inverted my colon and now allows me to speak with the ghost of Nostradamus? Yeah, it turns out his book of quatrains wasn't about the future after all. It was just an odd forum of pornography for poetry lovers. Weird.

Re: Advantages of ADHD
I'm a doctor. I have a horrible, lousy memory that leaves me up in the air about to fall down, when I'm consulting with my superiors about the patients, and I sometimes forget some tests that my superiors tell me to ask for.
However, when the patients have something urgent, I'm the one to reach there first because of my hyperactivity. Unlike most of my colleagues, I actually *go* to the patient for a full physical exam when the nurses tell me that the patient has a stomach ache. It gives me a lot of foot ache on my way home, but it also gives me the edge because I don't really miss important things. And the patients say I show them the interest most other doctors never do. So I guess my hyperactivity helps :-)) |

Re: Advantages of ADHD
having a better way to do things, thinking out of the box all the time..
normal people are programmed with rules, they paid attention in class so they predominately do and say what they were taught. I couldn't pay as much attention, so I'm pretty much self taught, researching all the best ways from all the best sources and so creating my own superior initiative (in my opinion lol).

Re: Advantages of ADHD
Yes and it is even better when you can also pay attention in class if you take meds...
so you have two options |

Re: Advantages of ADHD
I have almost always found that ADD makes myself and other people very creative and thoughtful. And also possibly independent, since I know lots of people feel "different" from others because of their ADD, which is not always a bad thing.

Re: Advantages of ADHD
Not knowing half the stuff i do is inapropriate/wrong, not remembering most of them aswell, at the time tho i think, its when things get pointed out mostley aswell, tho becuase people don't want to be around me, this rarely happens.
Oblivious to this planet and its ways, problems mostley ocur when pointed out or when get sacked. A scaty mind works both ways, i know no normal could put up with what i have, otherwise they'd be locked up/sectioned for somthing or other. Day dreaming rules and being able to colapse my mind in certain situations. I contantly need to know how things and minds work, i need knowledge. Normals bore me so much! The best quote i read here recently was, 'normal is a program on a washing mashine, wouldnt you want to be the spin cycle!' |

Re: Advantages of ADHD
IMO, adhd is a disorder. It makes your life more difficult. One can still be (very) talented and have special skills. Implementing them will still be a (relative) struggle, though. In other words, you can succeed INSPITE of your ADHD, not because of it.
