Sleep apnea question

Hi! I recently noticed that my little brother seems to have stopped breathing during his sleep. I kept reading about it and landed on this site http://www.fitness-health-talk.com/. Can anyone tell me how much it would cost to visit a sleep apnea doctor? It's really scary. This is the first time I have come upon this condition and it really bothers me.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Sleep apnea question

Well I"m just guessing based on what it costs to see specialist doctors in general - I would say maybe about $200-300 for the first visit and then medicare will give you maybe a 60-70% back.

I have seen a sleep specialist in the public hospital though - for free. However you have to go on a waiting list and it may take 2 or 3 months for an appointment. To do this you generally need to get your GP to refer you to a sleep disorders clinic at the hospital.

Getting your brother checked with a sleep specialist is more important than money and even if you have a health insurance than it will be the matter or just few dollars say 50-100$. So, I suggest you should meet a specialist as soon as possible because long-term breathlessness during sleep may also lead to severe health complications like heart-attack.

Re: Sleep apnea question

Having gone through the hoops myself. It costs me $50 out of pocket for my GP to look at me and go, "I think you should get a sleep study done, you look like people who have sleep apnea" while I was getting a physical for a gastro issue I was having.

The sleep study cost me $0.

Hiring the CPAP machine et al for a month to try out cost me $230.

Buying a brand new CPAP machine cost me $2000. If I had insurance, it would have cost me $500. I bought the most expensive machine; unless you need BiPAP machine (for those who need very high pressures) then you're looking at about $6000.
