I hate the term "mentally ill"
Aug 13, 2018 - 3:11 PM - by PoppnNSailinMan
I saw daveddd's thread on the definition of mental illness being invalidating for him, and I was all set to add my own rant about how much I hate the term "mentally ill" but saw that the thrust of his thread was something different, so didn't want to derail it.

So I thought I'd start my own rant here. I'm sure that mental health practitioners would consider ADHD and any diagnosable disorders in the DSM to be "mental illnesses" which, as daveddd rightly pointed out, are defined... [Read More]

Adhd parents: Does ADHD affect your ability to parent?
Aug 12, 2018 - 4:42 PM - by Fuzzy12
There have been a few incidents recently. Last week, I didn't register my little toddler grabbing a vit bottle and playing with it. When I finally realized that's a bad idea she had poured it all over herself and was licking it off her arm (it turned out to be fine. The max that she could have had was still below the toxic level according to the medical advice we got.)

I vowed to be more attentive. Then today she grabbed a knife from the kitchen table and was playing with it till... [Read More]

Aug 12, 2018 - 7:58 AM - by Swissy
Do you disclose your ADD dx when youíre screened for jury duty? I went one other time the day before my dx and they question you in a room full of people, so itís not like you can tell anyone privately.

The definition of mental illness is somewhat invalidating to me
Aug 11, 2018 - 11:05 PM - by daveddd
So i dont want to challenge the dsm or anything like that. I just want to say how i feel

So mental illness is defined societally by impairment

I was very impaired in all areas

Now not so much. Mindfulness helped me catch the behaviors that impaired me according to the dsm

I was able to correct my behavior that impaired my work, home. And relationship (. Though im separation from my wife I donít believe its a mental health thing, in... [Read More]

Hitting the limit of my ability to think: working memory?
Aug 07, 2018 - 6:34 PM - by Fuzzy12
I suspect it's a working memory issue but I'm struggling to explain it. Imagine trying to detect a pattern in a dataset but you can't because you are unable to keep all the different subparts of the pattern in your mind at the same time.

Imagine the sequence:

11657227583347544785

A pattern in this could be for example

A repeating sequence of a pair of identical numbers (eg 11, 22, 33, etc) followed by three random digits. Let's say... [Read More]
